{"id":16322,"date":"2025-01-02T03:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T03:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=16322"},"modified":"2025-01-02T03:16:07","modified_gmt":"2025-01-02T03:16:07","slug":"breaking-cowboys-linked-to-controversial-coach-as-perfect-fit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=16322","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Cowboys Linked to Controversial Coach as Perfect Fit.."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"m-detail-header--dek\">Why is Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores being touted as that &#8220;perfect&#8221; fit to replace Mike McCarthy as the Dallas Cowboys head coach?<\/div>\n<div class=\"m-detail-header--flexbox\">\n<div class=\"m-detail-header--meta\">\n<div class=\"m-description--list\">\n<p>FRISCO &#8211; Pro Tip: Beware the sports media outlet that touts anything and anybody as &#8220;perfect.&#8221; Given that there is no such thing as a &#8220;perfect&#8221; owner, GM, coach, player, trade or move &#8211; not even Babe Ruth, Lawrence Taylor or\u00a0LeBron James\u00a0are &#8220;perfect&#8221; &#8211; such a story is a suggestion that the outlet has no idea what it&#8217;s talking about.<\/p>\n<p>And in the specific case of successful but controversial\u00a0NFL\u00a0coach Brian Flores?<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-0\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-0\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>No. &#8220;Successful.&#8221; But &#8220;controversial.&#8221; And therefore, among many other reasons, not &#8220;perfect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NFL Coaching Carousel is about to spin, including with the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys, where\u00a0Mike McCarthy&#8217;s future here has yet to be decided.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy won a\u00a0Super Bowl\u00a0with the\u00a0Green Bay Packers\u00a0in 2010. Before this awful &#8220;Blow It Up&#8221; season, he&#8217;s overseen three straight 12-5 seasons capped with playoff apperances.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-1\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-1\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Is that enough for McCarthy and owner Jerry Jones to forge a contract extension for the presently lame-duck head coach? We are only few days from finding out. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>At which time, agents and media will engage in the activity of pushing &#8220;hot names&#8221; on the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hot&#8221; can be real. No doubt. That&#8217;s why we&#8217;ve made sure to address ideas about candidates who fit that mold, including\u00a0Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel and even another controversial figure in Jon Gruden. (Seriously. Very controversial. See below.)<\/p>\n<p>But Flores&#8217; tough-guy act didn&#8217;t play well as a head coach in Miami, where\u00a0Dolphins\u00a0quarterback\u00a0Tua Tagovailoa\u00a0has called Flores a &#8220;terrible person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And when he got fired in Miami, Flores filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against individual teams and the NFL itself.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-3\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-3\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>That is now a class action lawsuit, so while he is employed by the playoff-bound Vikings, one might think his climb in the NFL might be complicated. &#8230; with Jones having reacted to the 2022 suit by saying regarding the league&#8217;s hiring practices of minorities, &#8220;We can do better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One thought: Would the NFL increase its chances of winning in the lawsuit simply by offering Flores another head coaching job?<\/p>\n<p>Agasin &#8230; complicated and controversial.
