{"id":16810,"date":"2025-01-04T03:51:38","date_gmt":"2025-01-04T03:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=16810"},"modified":"2025-01-04T03:51:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-04T03:51:38","slug":"breaking-yankees-could-shed-hurlers-18-5-million-for-super-utility-man-in-trade-pitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=16810","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING : Yankees Could Shed Hurler&#8217;s $18.5 Million for &#8216;Super Utility&#8217; Man in Trade Pitch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the free agent signing of former Atlanta Braves\u00a0lefty ace Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal in December, and 2024 American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole recommitting to the\u00a0nine-year, $324 million deal\u00a0he signed before the 2020 season, the New York Yankees appear to have finalized their starting rotation heading into the 2025 season.<\/p>\n<p>With Fried, Cole, Carlos Rodon, 2024\u00a0AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt \u2014 who recorded a\u00a0career-low 2.85 ERA\u00a0in 2024 \u2014 the Yankees appear to have perhaps the strongest rotation in the AL. But that doesn&#8217;t mean general manager Brian Cashman is finished. He still has work to do, and that work involves not adding another starter, but dumping one.<\/p>\n<p>Though they have not confirmed it, the Yankees have at least appeared clear in their attention to rid themselves of 33-year-old Marcus Stroman, whose two-year,\u00a0$37 million contract signed\u00a0prior to the 2024 season quickly became an albatross. In return, they suggested, the Yankees could get back the Cardinals&#8217;\u00a0&#8220;super utility&#8221;\u00a0player, 27-year-old Brendan Donovan.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals&#8217; 2018 seventh-round draft pick worked his way to the major leagues not only with solid if unspectacular offensive skills \u2014\u00a0posting a .771 OPS\u00a0while hitting 30 home runs in 374 career games, with a respectable Wins Above Replacement number of 8.6 \u2014 but with his versatility in the field.<\/p>\n<p>In his brief, three-year career, Donovan has played all four infield positions and both corner outfield slots. In his rookie year of 2022 he won the\u00a0first-ever National League Golden Glove\u00a0award for utility players.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, after mulling over the trade pitch, the &#8220;Fireside Yankees&#8221;
