Former\u00a0New York Jets\u00a0coach\u00a0Robert Saleh,\u00a0Seattle Seahawks\u00a0assistant\u00a0Leslie Frazier\u00a0and\u00a0Philadelphia Eagles\u00a0offensive coordinator Kellen Moore also interviewed for the job.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Cowboys opted to hire Schottenheimer, 51, who has no head coaching experience but has been a long-time assistant at the college and NFL levels.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboys owner Jerry Jones led the coaching search and some other names emerged as candidates. That includes\u00a0Deion Sanders\u00a0and\u00a0Pete Carroll, who took a job with the\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders\u00a0on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Schottenheimer isn\u2019t a name that will move the needle with the fan base but Jones appears happy with how things played out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s no assistant anymore,\u201d\u00a0Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told ESPN.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cowboys Parted Ways With Mike McCarthy<\/h2>\n<p>The Cowboys found themselves in a somewhat unusual situation.\u00a0Mike McCarthy\u00a0coached out the final year of his contract, and the sides decided to part ways after a discussion following the season\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas finished the season 7-10, although they spent a chunk of the year without the services of franchise quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott. McCarthy had previously led Dallas to three consecutive 12-win regular seasons but had just one playoff win to show for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout Mike McCarthy\u2019s tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done,\u201d\u00a0Jones said. \u201cThat has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike\u2019s qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being. I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cowboys Eyeing Matt Eberflus as Defensive Coordinator<\/h2>\n<p>The Cowboys got a late start on their coaching search and Schottenheimer will have to scramble to assemble his staff. The first name he\u2019s looking to add is former\u00a0Chicago Bears\u00a0head coach Matt Eberflus, who would be the team\u2019s defensive coordinator. Ed Werder first\u00a0reported the interest. Eberflus previously served as a linebackers coach and defensive passing game coordinator with the Cowboys.<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys have a lot of pieces to work with on the defensive side of the ball, including perennial Pro Bowl talent\u00a0Micah Parsons. He\u2019s heading into his fifth NFL season and is expected to land a lucrative extension this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys recently extended quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0and wide receiver\u00a0CeeDee Lamb, who do have some consistency with Schottenheimer returning in his new role.
