{"id":2475,"date":"2024-11-19T09:21:31","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T09:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=2475"},"modified":"2024-11-19T09:21:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T09:21:31","slug":"breaking-ex-vp-of-officiating-hints-nfl-possibly-cost-49ers-a-win-by-covering-up-ref-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatoday.azontree.com\/?p=2475","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Ex-VP of Officiating Hints NFL Possibly Cost 49ers a Win by Covering Up Ref Error"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"m-detail--body\">\n<p>The\u00a0San Francisco 49ers\u00a0may have one heck of a bone to pick with the\u00a0NFL\u00a0about the incompetency of its officials.<\/p>\n<p>With 2:45 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday\u2019s 20-17\u00a0Seattle Seahawks\u00a0win, the 49ers were facing a fourth-and-6 from their own 42-yard line when line judge Kevin Cody made a questionable decision.<\/p>\n<p>The Seahawks had just called a timeout on a\u00a0Brock Purdy\u00a05-yard completion to Juan Jennings on third down to stop the clock, and as San Francisco lined up to punt, Cody came running up and blew a whistle, seemingly awarding Seattle a second timeout.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-0\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-0\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The problem is, a team can\u2019t call two timeouts in the same dead-ball period, which is exactly what the Seahawks got away with on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Former VP of NFL Officiating Mike Pereira confirmed as much during a recent interview with KNBR in San Francisco, stating the Seahawks should have been penalized five yards for being allowed the second timeout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it happened, I was kind of in the same mode \u2014 what did he do?\u201d Pereira asked. \u201c\u2026It is clear that Seattle asked for a second timeout. What you are to do when a team asks for a timeout when they\u2019re not entitled to it \u2014 either they\u2019re out of timeouts or they ask for one in that same dead-ball period \u2014 what you do is ignore it.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-1\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-1\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNow, it didn\u2019t get ignored, it got granted. So what is the rule? Is it simply a do-over at that point because the official erroneously granted that? No, it is a 5-yard penalty even though the official shouldn\u2019t have stopped it. When he does, it\u2019s a 5-yard penalty \u2014 that\u2019s a rule. The missed penalty could have cost the 49ers a win and a first-place tie with the\u00a0Arizona Cardinals\u00a0in the NFC West.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"m-in-content-ad-row l-inline mm-in-content-ad-row--in-content not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-3\">\n<div class=\"m-in-content-ad not-size-a not-size-b not-size-d\" data-ad-group=\"in_content-3\" data-zone-count=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going to officiate in the National Football League, then it is incumbent on the seven (officials) and replay that can get involved in penalty enforcements to at least [recognize that\u2019s a penalty].
