Could the Cowboys go retro and steal some talent from an enemy in the form of a Deebo Samuel trade?<\/p>\n

FRISCO \u2013\u00a0The\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0need weaponry at wide receiver and there might be some logic to them going retro by dealing with long-time arch-nemesis the\u00a0San Francisco 49ers.<\/p>\n

Back in Dallas\u2019 halcyon days of the 1990s, when the Cowboys were \u201cThe Team of the Decade\u201d after having jousted and won with the powerhouse 49ers, both organizations saw value in trying to rob talent from their rival.<\/p>\n

So Dallas traded for the Niners\u2019 gifted pass-rusher Charles Haley.<\/p>\n

And the Niners signed Dallas linebacker Ken Norton.<\/p>\n

And Dallas signed superstar cornerback\u00a0Deion Sanders.<\/p>\n

As 49ers team president Carmen Policy told me back then, \u201cWin a deal like that and you win twice. We get stronger and they get weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fast-forward to 2025 and both legendary organizations are struggling a bit. Dallas finished 7-10 and is now \u201cremodeling\u201d the roster. San Francisco was worse still, finishing 6-11.<\/p>\n

And among the coming changes in The Bay? They are moving on from standout receiver\u00a0Deebo Samuel.<\/p>\n

The Niners are now allowing Samuel and his representatives to seek a trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have,\u201d Samuel told ESPN. \u201cBut I have to do what\u2019s best. I\u2019m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cBut now I think it\u2019s best that we find another team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could that \u201cother team\u201d be the Cowboys?<\/p>\n

Deebo has been a particular thorn in the side of the Cowboys as his 49ers have all too often taken down Dallas in head-to-head meetings. Indeed, Dallas is 0-4 in recent clashes, including two painful playoff losses.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Samuel\u00a0ultimately signed with the Niners on a three-year, $71.5 million extension. Is he still a $20 million APT-level receiver?<\/p>\n

Samuel, 29, is coming off maybe his worst season ever, with 51 catches and 670 yards with three TDs through the air. (A dual threat, he also 136 rushing yards with another score).<\/p>\n

Those are full-season career-lows.<\/p>\n

Can the Cowboys salvage something here to put Deebo in partnership with\u00a0CeeDee Lamb\u00a0as a top-notch duo for QB Dak Prescott?<\/p>\n

As always,\u00a0this isn\u2019t a matter of Dallas\u2019 cap ability; it\u2019s a matter of want-to\u00a0\u2026 and a matter of value.\u00a0Samuel first needs to be judged by the personnel department as his going-forward value is gauged. And if he passes that test?<\/p>\n
