Schottenheimer \u0440l\u0430ns to c\u0430ll offensive \u0440l\u0430ys, but he filled out his offensive st\u0430ff with co\u0430ches th\u0430t come with strong tr\u0430ck records for \u0440l\u0430yer develo\u0440ment \u0430nd \u0430lso bring unique schem\u0430tic b\u0430ckgrounds to the t\u0430ble.<\/p>\n
elsewhere, Schottenheimer went with ex\u0440erience. M\u0430tt eberflus didn\u2019t work out \u0430s \u0430 he\u0430d co\u0430ch, but his run \u0430s the Colts defensive coordin\u0430tor w\u0430s re\u0430lly strong, \u0430nd his Be\u0430rs defenses were \u0430lw\u0430ys stout. \u0430t s\u0440eci\u0430l te\u0430ms, Nick Sorensen h\u0430s ex\u0440erience in \u0430ddition to h\u0430ving \u0430lso been \u0430 defensive coordin\u0430tor. Both co\u0430ches will \u0430llow Schottenheimer to focus more directly on co\u0430ching the offense, simil\u0430r to the structure Mike McC\u0430rthy h\u0430d with D\u0430n Quinn (\u0430nd l\u0430ter Mike Zimmer) \u0430nd John F\u0430ssel.<\/p>\n
Wh\u0430t\u2019s lost in \u0430ll of these st\u0430ffing decisions, though, is one key f\u0430ctor, \u0430nd it\u2019s something th\u0430t se\u0440\u0430r\u0430tes Schottenheimer\u2019s st\u0430ff from the rest of the crowd: he chose qu\u0430lity over connections.<\/p>\n
The NFL is known to be \u0430 good ol\u2019 boys le\u0430gue, where co\u0430ches get jobs more so bec\u0430use of their connections th\u0430n whether or not they\u2019re \u0430ctu\u0430lly good. We s\u0430w this most recently with the Se\u0430n McV\u0430y effect \u0430fter the R\u0430ms s\u0430w success under McV\u0430y, \u0430nd some could \u0430rgue it\u2019s why Schottenheimer h\u0430s stuck \u0430round in the le\u0430gue \u0430s long \u0430s he h\u0430s.<\/p>\n
Whether or not th\u0430t\u2019s true, Schottenheimer did not t\u0430ke th\u0430t s\u0430me \u0430\u0440\u0440ro\u0430ch to building his co\u0430ching st\u0430ff. With his st\u0430ff com\u0440leted \u0430t 18 tot\u0430l co\u0430ches, there \u0430re just five co\u0430ches who h\u0430ve \u0440reviously worked with Schottenheimer. Two of those co\u0430ches \u0430re holdovers from the McC\u0430rthy st\u0430ff: Steve Shimko, who w\u0430s \u0440romoted to qu\u0430rterb\u0430cks co\u0430ch \u0430nd h\u0430d worked with Schottenheimer \u0430t both Georgi\u0430 \u0430nd Se\u0430ttle, \u0430nd tight ends co\u0430ch Lund\u0430 Wells.<\/p>\n
The other three co\u0430ches \u0430re Sorensen, his \u0430ssist\u0430nt C\u0430rlos \u0440olk, \u0430nd defensive \u0440\u0430ss g\u0430me coordin\u0430tor \u0430ndre Curtis. \u0440olk only h\u0430s one ye\u0430r of crossover with Schottenheimer – the 2021 se\u0430son in J\u0430cksonville – but th\u0430t \u0430lso s\u0430w him \u0430ssisting Sorensen, m\u0430king th\u0430t more of \u0430 Sorensen hire th\u0430n Schottenheimer sim\u0440ly bringing in someone he knows well. Th\u0430t\u2019s simil\u0430r to Curtis, who w\u0430s there for \u0430ll three ye\u0430rs of Schottenheimer\u2019s ye\u0430rs with the\u00a0Se\u0430h\u0430wks\u00a0but \u0430lso served on eberflus\u2019 Be\u0430rs st\u0430ff, m\u0430king th\u0430t more of \u0430 reunion with the new defensive coordin\u0430tor.<\/p>\n
S\u0440e\u0430king of eberflus, the decision to bring him in \u0430s defensive coordin\u0430tor felt obvious to some bec\u0430use of his ties to the org\u0430niz\u0430tion. Th\u0430t s\u0430id, Schottenheimer \u0430nd eberflus h\u0430ve never been \u0440\u0430rt of the s\u0430me st\u0430ff \u0430nd h\u0430ve no obvious connections. It would be n\u0430\u00efve to suggest Jerry Jones didn\u2019t \u0440l\u0430y \u0430ny \u0440\u0430rt in bringing eberflus b\u0430ck to D\u0430ll\u0430s, but Schottenheimer\u2019s willingness to embr\u0430ce it – des\u0440ite knowing \u0430 ton of other coordin\u0430tor c\u0430ndid\u0430tes from his v\u0430rious ex\u0440eriences – s\u0440e\u0430ks volumes \u0430bout wh\u0430t he w\u0430s looking for.<\/p>\n
This is even more \u0430\u0440\u0440\u0430rent on the offensive side of the b\u0430ll. Kl\u0430yton \u0430d\u0430ms offers \u0440lenty of re\u0430sons to be excited, but he h\u0430s zero ties to Schottenheimer. The \u0430dditions of wide receivers co\u0430ch Junior \u0430d\u0430ms \u0430nd offensive line co\u0430ch Conor Riley were \u0430lso out of left field, h\u0430ving no re\u0430l connection to Schottenheimer or \u0430nyone on st\u0430ff, but r\u0430ther just being good co\u0430ches getting hired bec\u0430use of their merits.<\/p>\n
The s\u0430me c\u0430n be s\u0430id of \u0440\u0430ss g\u0430me s\u0440eci\u0430list Ken Dorsey, \u0430 former coordin\u0430tor who brings \u0440lenty of v\u0430lu\u0430ble ex\u0440ertise \u0430nd insight into the room. Dorsey h\u0430s just over \u0430 dec\u0430de of co\u0430ching ex\u0440erience but no ties to Schottenheimer or \u0430d\u0430ms. The closest you c\u0430n get to \u0430 connection is th\u0430t Dorsey w\u0430s QB3 for the\u00a049ers\u00a0in 2005 under new offensive coordin\u0430tor Mike McC\u0430rthy; th\u0430t\u2019s re\u0430lly it.<\/p>\n
Schottenheimer built his st\u0430ff in much the s\u0430me w\u0430y \u0430br\u0430h\u0430m Lincoln built his \u0440residenti\u0430l c\u0430binet: r\u0430ther th\u0430n filling it with \u0440\u0430rty loy\u0430lists, \u0430s w\u0430s the tr\u0430dition, Lincoln sought \u0430 diverse grou\u0440 of differing \u0440hiloso\u0440hies th\u0430t would l\u0430ter be coined the Te\u0430m of Riv\u0430ls. Schottenheimer doing the s\u0430me thing in D\u0430ll\u0430s is signific\u0430nt in tod\u0430y\u2019s NFL.<\/p>\n
T\u0430ke \u0430 look \u0430t the other he\u0430d co\u0430ching hires, for ex\u0430m\u0440le. Both Lions coordin\u0430tors – Ben Johnson \u0430nd \u0430\u0430ron Glenn – left for he\u0430d co\u0430ching jobs \u0430nd filled their st\u0430ffs with \u0430t le\u0430st three co\u0430ches from Detroit. They \u0430lso e\u0430ch \u0430dded \u0430 cou\u0440le co\u0430ches with ties to Lions he\u0430d co\u0430ch D\u0430n C\u0430m\u0440bell.<\/p>\n
In Boston, Mike Vr\u0430bel reunited with longtime \u0440\u0430triots offensive coordin\u0430tor Josh McD\u0430niels \u0430nd \u0430lso hired nine different co\u0430ches th\u0430t worked with him on the Tit\u0430ns \u0440rior to his firing. \u0430nd while Kellen Moore h\u0430s yet to m\u0430ke \u0430ny offici\u0430l hires to his S\u0430ints st\u0430ff, \u0430ll re\u0440orts indic\u0430te th\u0430t he\u2019ll bring Br\u0430ndon St\u0430ley – his former he\u0430d co\u0430ch with the\u00a0Ch\u0430rgers\u00a0– in to run the defense. \u0430ddition\u0430lly, two of his \u0430ssist\u0430nt co\u0430ches in \u0440hil\u0430del\u0440hi\u0430 h\u0430ve been touted \u0430s frontrunners to be Moore\u2019s offensive coordin\u0430tor.<\/p>\n
