Another All-Pro has joined a changing Baltimore Ravens secondary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Trading for\u00a0Tre\u2019Davious White\u00a0wasn\u2019t enough for the\u00a0Baltimore Ravens. They\u2019re still adding talent to a changing cornerback group after signing veteran\u00a0Desmond King\u00a0to the practice squad.<\/p>\n
King\u2019s arrival was confirmed by\u00a0Ravens.com Editorial Director Ryan Mink\u00a0on Tuesday, November 19. He reported the team made room for King by waiving rookie free agent\u00a0Ryan \u2018Bump\u2019 Cooper Jr.<\/p>\n
Just\u00a0like White, King is a former All-Pro. He\u2019s also somebody expected to man a niche position in a struggling secondary.<\/p>\n
Desmond King to Fill Key Spot for Ravens<\/h2>\n
King earned first-team All-Pro honors with the\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers\u00a0in 2018, but he\u2019s since bounced around the NFL somewhat. The 29-year-old\u2019s journey has included stops with the\u00a0Tennessee Titans,\u00a0Pittsburgh Steelers\u00a0and two stints with the\u00a0Houston Texans.<\/p>\n
That second tour with the Texans came to an end this season, after King rarely made it off the practice squad. He has a better chance to be a viable contributor for the Ravens at a key spot.<\/p>\n
Mink\u00a0detailed how\u00a0\u201cKing started his career playing mostly at nickel cornerback, where he thrived his first couple of seasons.\u201d Moving King back inside would make sense because he \u201ccould help give the Ravens more secondary depth, particularly at nickel cornerback with Arthur Maulet sidelined by a calf injury suffered last week. Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that he doesn\u2019t expect Maulet to go on injured reserve at this point, \u2018so we\u2019ll just have to see how it heals.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Playing in the slot, closer to the line of scrimmage suits a tough and resourceful defensive back like King. He\u2019s not afraid to go after the ball, having\u00a0broken up 35 passes in his career.<\/p>\n
King also offers useful blitz skills, evidenced by 9.5 sacks. The Ravens found out about those skills when King completely stoned running back\u00a0Justice Hill\u00a0on a slot blitz highlighted by\u00a0NFL Network\u2019s Kendell Hollowell during last season\u2019s playoffs.<\/p>\n
The Ravens still love to send the rush from multiple angles, so King can be an asset in their pressure packages. Yet, his greater value will come from how he allows the Ravens to reshuffle things on the back end.<\/p>\n
Ravens Close to Necessary Overhaul of Secondary<\/h2>\n
Changes are already afoot at safety, where head coach John Harbaugh has\u00a0named two new starters\u00a0in deep areas. Altering the pecking order is the next necessary step for a defense that\u2019s already given up\u00a03,351 yards and 22 touchdowns\u00a0through the air.<\/p>\n
Elevating King to the gameday mix can mean shifting White and fellow All-Pro\u00a0Marlon Humphrey\u00a0to the perimeter on a permanent basis. That would ease the burden on\u00a0Brandon Stephens, who has had\u00a0trouble travelling with an opponent\u2019s No. 1 wide receiver each week.<\/p>\n
These are moves the Ravens should make, but the team ought to be wary about placing too much trust in experienced defensive backs. Veterans like safety pair\u00a0Marcus Williams\u00a0and\u00a0Eddie Jackson\u00a0underperforming are a big reason why Baltimore\u2019s pass defense has been such a liability.<\/p>\n
