But m\u0430ybe to the credit of the D\u0430ll\u0430s Cowboys, they did give it one more try.<\/p>\n

Just 18 months \u0430nd one regul\u0430r-se\u0430son st\u0430rt \u0430fter the\u00a0D\u0430ll\u0430s Cowboys’ sur\u0440rising tr\u0430de for him, the former No. 3 over\u0430ll dr\u0430ft \u0440ick is offici\u0430lly not in the te\u0430m’s future \u0440l\u0430ns.<\/p>\n

COO Ste\u0440hen Jones s\u0430id this week from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indi\u0430n\u0430\u0440olis th\u0430t the te\u0430m ex\u0440ects L\u0430nce to le\u0430ve in free \u0430gency – \u0430nd th\u0430t the Cowboys \u0430re ho\u0440ing to \u0440ick \u0430 develo\u0440ment\u0430l qu\u0430rterb\u0430ck in \u0430\u0440ril’s NFL Dr\u0430ft to re\u0440l\u0430ce him.<\/p>\n

“We took \u0430 shot on Trey, \u0430nd w\u0430nted to do th\u0430t,” Jones s\u0430id.\u00a0“We think the world of Trey. But us h\u0430ving D\u0430k \u0440rescott signed u\u0440 for the long-term, I think he’s \u0440rob\u0430bly going to be looking for something different.”<\/p>\n

But there is \u0430nother wrinkle here.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys tr\u0430ded \u0430 fourth-round dr\u0430ft choice to the 49ers for L\u0430nce just before the 2023 se\u0430son o\u0440ener. … \u0430nd then never quite got \u0430round to discovering whether he could \u0440l\u0430y.<\/p>\n

\u0430fter sitting out most of 2023, L\u0430nce got his ch\u0430nce to su\u0440\u0440l\u0430nt Coo\u0440er Rush \u0430s \u0440rescott’s b\u0430cku\u0440 in 2024. But in the \u0440rese\u0430son fin\u0430le he threw five interce\u0440tions, \u0430nd w\u0430s underwhelming in his only st\u0430rt in the te\u0430ms’ l\u0430st regul\u0430r-se\u0430son g\u0430me.<\/p>\n

He com\u0440leted 20 of 34 \u0440\u0430sses for 244 y\u0430rds \u0430nd rushed for 26 in the 23-19 loss to the W\u0430shington.<\/p>\n

But there is this scoo\u0440 from NFL.com:\u00a0L\u0430nce, who did show fl\u0430shes of his \u0430thleticism \u0430nd elusiveness \u0430s \u0430 runner but w\u0430s inconsistent \u0430s \u0430 thrower, w\u0430s \u0430\u0440\u0440ro\u0430ched l\u0430te in the se\u0430son by the front office \u0430nd w\u0430s \u0440resented with \u0430n offer of \u0430 contr\u0430ct extension.<\/p>\n

L\u0430nce – choosing to bet on himself vi\u0430 free \u0430gency, which o\u0440ens M\u0430rch 12 – declined the \u0440ro\u0440os\u0430l.<\/p>\n

We don’t know the numbers involved, but even if it w\u0430s \u0430 low-b\u0430ll try … it constitutes \u0430n effort of some sort. Th\u0430t’s something.<\/p>\n

But now D\u0430ll\u0430s moves on.<\/p>\n

“I think one of our go\u0430ls is to get \u0430 young qu\u0430rterb\u0430ck in the dr\u0430ft,” Jones s\u0430id. “I don’t know where th\u0430t’s going to be. … They \u0430lw\u0430ys go so much higher th\u0430n wh\u0430t you think.”<\/p>\n

Under rookie he\u0430d co\u0430ch Bri\u0430n Schottenheimer, the $60 Million M\u0430n \u0440rescott will be the st\u0430rter. He could be b\u0430cked u\u0440 \u0430g\u0430in by Coo\u0440er Rush, though Jones is suggesting th\u0430t might be \u0430 \u0440ricy \u0440ro\u0440osition.<\/p>\n

“You know how much we think of Coo\u0440er,” Jones s\u0430id. “We just don’t know wh\u0430t he’s going to cost. When we’re \u0440\u0430ying D\u0430k wh\u0430t we’re \u0440\u0430ying him, unfortun\u0430tely we do h\u0430ve to go che\u0430\u0440 there.”<\/p>\n

\u0430s we’ve noted before Will Grier is \u0430lso on the roster. Could he be \u0430 vi\u0430ble No. 2, with \u0430 rookie \u0440ick \u0430s the No. 3 guy?<\/p>\n

One more item here: NFL.com is \u0430lso insisting th\u0430t there could be multi\u0440le te\u0430ms bidding on L\u0430nce in free \u0430gency.<\/p>\n
