If there is one thing you can applaud the Dallas Cowboys for this offseason, it’s that they’ve extended key homegrown players like Osa Odighizuwa and KaVontae Turpin.<\/p>\n
Odighizuwa should have been signed last year, but fans are beyond expecting this front office to get out in front of extensions.<\/p>\n
The important thing is Odighizuwa is back, and so are a number of restricted free agents. That list includes safeties Juanyeh Thomas and Markquese Bell, offensive lineman Brock Hoffman, who may start next season, and special teams ace C.J. Goodwin.<\/p>\n
It would behoove the Cowboys to complement those moves by\u00a0bringing in some impact players\u00a0from outside the organization, but they are hell-bent on retaining their own.\u00a0ESPN’s Todd Archer\u00a0is reporting the team has signed punter Bryan Anger to a two-year deal.<\/p>\n
On the surface, re-signing Anger is a smart move. The 36-year-old has made two All-Pros in four years with the Cowboys and has averaged a whopping 49 yards per punt during that span to go with 92 punts that have been downed inside the 20-yard line.<\/p>\n
Anger is one of the best punters in the business and re-signing him means Dallas will keep its special teams arsenal together for at least another season after they extended Turpin and re-signed long snapper Trent Sieg. Brandon Aubrey, another player who should be extended this offseason, will be back as the game’s premier kicking weapon.<\/p>\n
Again, keeping Anger is good business. The problem is Dallas re-signing its punter while myriad teams are using free agency to improve.<\/p>\n
If re-signing Anger was sprinkled in with retaining Chauncey Golston and splurging on linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who signed with the Broncos, or defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who agreed to terms with the Vikings, fans wouldn’t dare jeer the front office.<\/p>\n
Speaking of the Vikings, they too re-signed their own punter, Ryan Wright. It was actually their first move of free agency. You wouldn’t know it, though, because they’ve been spending at an incredible rate.<\/p>\n
In addition to re-signing star RB Aaron Jones and standout corner Byron Murphy, Minnesota has signed Hargrave,\u00a0DT Jonathan Allen (three years, $60 million), guard Will Fries (five years, $88 million) and center Ryan Kelly (two years, $18 million). This is all after the Vikings won 14 games.<\/p>\n
In Dallas, though, the Anger deal headlines day two of free agency alongside the Turpin extension and Solomon Thomas signing. All after they finished 7-10 and cleared close to $60 million in cap room before free agency by restructuring Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.<\/p>\n
