WORCESTER \u2014 Hard-throwing prospect\u00a0Luis Guerrero\u00a0spent spring training competing for a spot on the\u00a0Red Sox\u2019 Opening Day roster while also learning a new pitch.<\/p>\n

Guerrero ended up getting optioned to\u00a0Triple-A Worcester\u00a0but he\u2019ll likely be one of the first relievers promoted once Boston needs to dip into its depth.<\/p>\n

A cutter was a pitch introduced to Guerrero during camp to complement his four-seam fastball and changeup. He also throws a sweeper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething to throw lefties, kind of throw them off the changeup,\u201d Guerrero said through translator\/defensive coach Iggy Suarez on Friday at Polar Park before Worcester\u2019s regular season opener.<\/p>\n

Guerrero appeared to be in a good position to make the Opening Day roster early in camp.\u00a0The 24-year-old was in the high-90s with his fastball and allowed one hit and one walk while striking out six in 3 scoreless innings (three relief outings) to begin Grapefruit League play.<\/p>\n

But control became an issue. He walked eight batters and gave up six runs in his final four Grapefruit League outings (2 \u2154 innings). The\u00a0Red Sox optioned him to Worcester on March 19.<\/p>\n

\u201cFeel it was a good spring training,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cKind of part of the process knowing there\u2019s going to be bumps on the road. Trying out a new pitch. So trying to get comfortable with that.”<\/p>\n

Manager Alex Cora said about their meeting, “The good thing about him is he didn\u2019t get upset. He\u2019s like, \u2018I got to keep working. I\u2019ve got to keep working. I\u2019ll be back.\u2018”<\/p>\n

He\u2019s motivated to get back to the big leagues. He didn\u2019t allow an earned run in 10 innings during his first major league stint last September. He limited opponents to one unearned run, six hits (just one extra-base hit) and two walks while striking out nine over nine outings. Guerrero, who had previously struggled with control in the minors, did a much better job throwing strikes during the second half last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s part of the process,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cAt the end of the day, they make the decisions. It\u2019s just something that\u2019s out of my control. Keep working is something I\u2019m going to take advantage of down here. Do the necessary adjustments to get back to the big leagues.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was Guerrero\u2019s second big league camp. But it also was the first spring training where he legitimately had a shot to break camp with the major league team.<\/p>\n

Cora pointed out that young players can let their nerves get to them when they are trying to make their first Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat comes into play, too,\u201d Cora said. \u201cSometimes they try to do too much. And our job as an organization is kind of like \u2018Slow it down. You will be fine.\u2018\u201d<\/p>\n

Guerrero said already experiencing one big league spring training camp helped with the jitters this spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s all part of the process \u2014 just trying to stay as grounded as you can to be able to (stay) present … to get through that.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
