It wasn\u2019t contract-related, draft nonsense, or trade buzz\u2014it was a legal dispute over a number.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">More specifically, the No. 8.<\/p>\n<div id=\"inarticle_d_1_4\" class=\"mm-slot-content\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. had filed a trademark request for a stylized version of the No. 8\u2014one that looked like the number that\u2019s been synonymous with Lamar Jackson\u2019s brand since his Louisville days. The two-time MVP quarterback has already trademarked \u201cERA 8 by Lamar Jackson,\u201d and his team didn\u2019t take kindly to anyone circling too close (just ask Troy Aikman).<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Naturally, Jackson&#8217;s team filed an opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. For a couple of days, it looked like we had a full-blown sports crossover beef on our hands. Then Dale Jr. went on his podcast, explained the whole thing, and shut down all controversy.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Dale Earnhardt Jr. clears the air with Lamar Jackson<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">On the latest episode of\u00a0<em>The Dale Jr. Download<\/em>, Earnhardt broke down what happened in detail\u2014and made it clear there\u2019s no bad blood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"inarticle_d_1_5\" class=\"mm-slot-content\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\"><em>\u201cWe learned that the Budweiser No. 8 trademark is not going to be continued and renewed by Teresa,\u201d Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. \u201cWe were a bit surprised by that because she kept the one trademark. Haven\u2019t talked to Teresa. Don\u2019t know why that was her decision, but we saw an opportunity to pick up the number and see if we could get the trademark.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">After locking up that version of the mark, Earnhardt\u2019s team also filed a \u201cPlan B\u201d application to trademark the Junior Motorsports version of the No. 8&#8230; just in case. That second trademark, it turns out, is the one Lamar opposed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\"><em>\u201cI learned on social media about the same time as everybody else did that Lamar was contesting our trademark application,\u201d Earnhardt Jr. said. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t suing me. He\u2019s just contesting it. And there\u2019s a part of the trademark process where if you believe somebody\u2019s applying for a trademark and it\u2019s going to hurt your brand, you can oppose it\u2026 I learned that it was the Junior Motorsports [eight] and we weren\u2019t ever going to use that again\u2026 so yeah, it\u2019s a non-issue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"inarticle_d_1_6\" class=\"mm-slot-content\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Rather than fight over something he had no intention of using, Earnhardt quickly filed paperwork to drop the application. He got the Bud 8 trademark he wanted, and Jackson kept full control of his brand. Yay number<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Of course, the feud\u00a0didn\u2019t come without its fair share of drama. RFK Racing chimed in with a not-so-subtle shot at Lamar Jackson, posting a picture of their No. 6 and No. 17 cars with the caption:<br \/>\n\u201cExcited to have Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen numbers on the cars this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">In the end, there was no courtroom showdown. No drawn-out dispute. Just two superstars, one number, and a whole lot of clarity. Earnhardt got the mark he wanted. Jackson kept his.
