San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
In a frustrating year for\u00a0San Francisco 49ers\u00a0WR Deebo Samuel has prompted criticism from one of the Niners\u2019 best-ever players.<\/p>\n
San Francisco is 5-5 and that is partially due to a disjointed season from the offense. Injuries to players like RB\u00a0Christian McCaffrey\u00a0have played a factor, while\u00a0Deebo\u00a0is having a less-than-explosive campaign<\/p>\n
On November 21, NFL Hall of Famer and former 49ers WR\u00a0Terrell Owens\u00a0criticized Samuel\u2019s season on\u00a095.7 The Game.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeebo is not really playing up to Deebo\u2019s standards,\u201d Owens said. \u201cIt seems like he\u2019s more focused on his pregame attire than the game. If we can shift that focus, maybe that can energize and create some more production from an offensive standpoint. I\u2019m just being tongue-in-cheek with that.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the same day, Samuel responded through a post on X. While he kept it short, the message from the\u00a0San Francisco receiver is clear.<\/p>\n
\u201cT.O cut it fam!!!!\u201d\u00a0Samuel wrote.<\/p>\n
Samuel deserves some criticism for his play, but it\u2019s somewhat ironic that a legendarily flashy player like Owens is calling out Deebo\u2019s pregame attire. Either way,\u00a049ers fans\u00a0will be hoping that T.O.\u2019s comments get Samuel fired up.<\/p>\n
Are Deebo\u2019s Numbers Actually Off?<\/h2>\n
Considering he\u2019s coming off a quiet performance in the 20-17 loss to the\u00a0Seattle Seahawks, it may feel like Samuel is having an off year. In reality, his rate of production isn\u2019t far off from his 2023 season.<\/p>\n
Without counting the\u00a0Kansas City Chiefs contest that saw Deebo put on pads but not play due to illness, Samuel has 33 catches for 490 yards in 8 games. He only has one receiving touchdown, but also scored once as a rusher and has totaled 79 rushing yards.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s averaging 61 receiving yards per game and 14.8 yards per catch. In 2023, the 28-year-old WR averaged 59.5 yards per game and 14.9 yards per game. While\u00a0Samuel\u00a0has not as big of a factor as a rusher, his primary job of catching passes hasn\u2019t wavered.<\/p>\n
Samuel\u2019s somewhat quiet season feels representative of the 49ers\u2019 general offensive issues. And with QB\u00a0Brock Purdy missing the upcoming clash with the Green Bay Packers, it\u2019s unlikely that will change anytime soon.<\/p>\n
49ers Could Add More Touches Deebo\u2019s Role<\/h2>\n
On November 19, SI.com writer Grant Cohn wrote an article detailing how McCaffrey\u2019s return has hurt the 49ers offense. He called for head coach Kyle Shanahan to utilize RBs\u00a0Jordan Mason\u00a0and\u00a0Isaac Guerendo\u00a0more.<\/p>\n
\u201cAdding McCaffrey to Mason and Guerendo only should make the 49ers offense better,\u201d Cohn wrote. \u201cBut instead of using all three running backs, the 49ers have used mainly McCaffrey, who\u2019s clearly not 100 percent himself yet\u2026 But for the time being, McCaffrey is hurting the running game. The 49ers need to redistribute some of his carries to Mason and Guerendo to balance out the offense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cohn is obviously not calling for Deebo, but that could be something\u00a0the Niners\u00a0consider. Samuel has struggled to make a big impact, averaging 2.9 yards per carry, but\u00a0Shanahan\u00a0may need to find a solution through the WR.<\/p>\n
