As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to welcome in their rookie additions with the NFL Draft this week, they are continuing to do work on outside additions in the free agent and trade markets.<\/p>\n
For one, veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore met with the Cowboys on Tuesday, as he enters free agency once again looking for a cornerback-needy team to acquire his services. With Dallas not expecting injured\u00a0Trevon Diggs back for the start of the season\u00a0and\u00a0losing Jourdan Lewis to the Jaguars\u00a0in free agency, the need is desperate at the position.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re always looking to make our roster better,\u201d executive vice president Stephen Jones said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t always mean that if they\u2019re in the building that there\u2019s a deal in the works. In general, our player acquisition is year-round.\u201d<\/p>\n
Naturally, the Cowboys are not expected to sign Gilmore in the immediate future, according to a team source. However, owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that the trade market could see some action with the team as soon as before the draft.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft,\u201d Jones said. \u201cTwo pretty substantive trades, been working on today.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cowboys have already been on the receiving end of three trades this offseason, as they acquired linebacker\u00a0Kenneth Murray Jr. in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, cornerback\u00a0Kaiir Elam in a deal with the Buffalo Bills\u00a0and backup quarterback\u00a0Joe Milton III in an exchange with the New England Patriots.<\/p>\n
Veteran options at positions of need have been openly discussed on the trade market, such as veteran cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins and Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers. While the Cowboys would most likely have to take on a decently sized contract with a veteran option, they have the cap space freedom to do so this offseason.<\/p>\n
Heading into draft weekend, the Cowboys are hoping to be in a position to take the best player available in the first round rather than reach for a position of need. Grabbing proven impact players at those positions of need beforehand could alleviate some of that pressure when they are on the clock on Thursday night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
