The\u00a0Boston Red Sox suffered one of their ugliest losses of the 2025 season on Monday, falling to the Detroit Tigers in a 14-2 beatdown that felt all too familiar. In a performance that eerily mirrored 1983 Red Sox history, Boston starter Tanner Houck was shelled for 11 earned runs in just 2.1 innings, a meltdown that tied a franchise record for futility on the mound.<\/p>\n

It was a performance that called back to Doug Bird’s infamous outing in 1983, the only other time in franchise history that a starter allowed double-digit runs in fewer than three innings, until now. Houck, shockingly, has done it twice this season already, making him the only pitcher in Red Sox history to endure\u00a0this kind of collapse on the mound more than once, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today stated on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only starter in Red Sox history to allow 10 or more runs in fewer than 3 innings before this year was Doug Bird in 1983 (11 ER in 2.2 innings),\u201d Nightengale wrote. \u201cTanner Houck has done it twice within a month.\u201d<\/p>\n
