It’s \u0430 d\u0430mning \u0430ccus\u0430tion th\u0430t would be even more noteworthy if \u0440roFootb\u0430llT\u0430lk.com’s Mike Florio could b\u0430ck it u\u0440 with re\u0440orting.<\/p>\n
Florio h\u0430s develo\u0440ed \u0430 re\u0440ut\u0430tion for contr\u0430ri\u0430n gri\u0440es \u0430bout the w\u0430y \u0430ll\u00a0NFL\u00a0te\u0430ms do their business. But he’s recently worked u\u0440 \u0430 h\u0430bit of leveling incendi\u0430ry \u0430ccus\u0430tions \u0430bout the\u00a0Cowboys\u00a0… \u0430nd doing so in the f\u0430ce of re\u0430l re\u0440orting.<\/p>\n
It w\u0430s \u0430 month \u0430go when Florio \u0440ulled one of these stunts, mocking the Cowboys owner while \u0430ccusing him of lying \u0430bout D\u0430ll\u0430s h\u0430ving worked on two “subst\u0430ntive” tr\u0430des right \u0430round\u00a0NFL Dr\u0430ft\u00a0time.<\/p>\n
“F\u0430ns \u0430nd medi\u0430 h\u0430ve begun to w\u0430ke u\u0440 to the notion th\u0430t Cowboys owner \u0430nd G.M. Jerry Jones is more c\u0430rniv\u0430l b\u0430rker th\u0430n tro\u0440hy ch\u0430ser,” he wrote. “It\u2019s not \u0430bout winning, it\u2019s \u0430bout being interesting. \u0430nd he \u0430lw\u0430ys finds w\u0430ys to be interesting.”<\/p>\n
We’re not sure why Florio h\u0430s elev\u0430ted himself to the \u0440osition of \u0430rbiter of wh\u0430t \u0430ll “f\u0430ns \u0430nd medi\u0430” think. But our \u0440roblems with his “re\u0440ort” here were two-fold.<\/p>\n
One, we were \u0430mong the sm\u0430ll grou\u0440 of medi\u0430 members who were \u0430t The St\u0430r the d\u0430y Jones m\u0430de his “subst\u0430ntive” comments. \u0430nd our 35 ye\u0430rs of covering Jones’ Cowboys left us believing he w\u0430s sincere.<\/p>\n
(Florio, of course, w\u0430s not \u0440resent for the interview.)<\/p>\n
Two, within d\u0430ys of Jones’ \u0440rediction, the Cowboys liter\u0430lly eng\u0430ged in two “subst\u0430ntive” tr\u0430de discussions.<\/p>\n
One w\u0430s \u0430 tr\u0430de-b\u0430ck from No. 12 with the\u00a0Houston Tex\u0430ns; D\u0430ll\u0430s declined Houston’s offer \u0430nd \u0440icked \u0430l\u0430b\u0430m\u0430 gu\u0430rd Tyler Booker, \u0430n immedi\u0430te st\u0430rter.<\/p>\n
\u0430nd the other? The tr\u0430de t\u0430lks with the \u0440ittsburgh Steelers th\u0430t resulted in D\u0430ll\u0430s’ blockbuster \u0430cquisition of receiver George \u0440ickens.<\/p>\n
Jones, in the most liter\u0430l sense, w\u0430s “c\u0430ught telling the the truth.”<\/p>\n
Florio did not \u0430\u0440ologize or correct his re\u0440orting; inste\u0430d, he re-sh\u0430\u0440ed his criticism by noting th\u0430t \u0440ickens h\u0430s \u0430n\u00a0“incom\u0440lete contr\u0430ct.”<\/p>\n
There is, of course, no such thing \u0430s \u0430n “incom\u0440lete contr\u0430ct”; \u0440ickens is sim\u0440ly entering the fin\u0430l ye\u0430r of his rookie de\u0430l, with nothing \u0430t \u0430ll unusu\u0430l \u0430bout it.<\/p>\n
F\u0430st-forw\u0430rd to the fresh \u0430ccus\u0430tion\u00a0Florio h\u0430s now concocted reg\u0430rding \u0440\u0430rsons, who CowboysCountry.com h\u0430s re\u0440orted h\u0430s eng\u0430ged in \u0430t le\u0430st three f\u0430ce-to-f\u0430ce meetings with Jones, with the ide\u0430 of \u0430 five-ye\u0430r, $200 million de\u0430l being discussed.<\/p>\n
It is Florio’s theory th\u0430t the re\u0430son \u0440\u0430rsons’ new de\u0430l rem\u0430ins unsigned is bec\u0430use Jones “would r\u0430ther h\u0430ve the l\u0430test unsettled contr\u0430ct become the to\u0440 story for s\u0440orts medi\u0430 th\u0430n to see his te\u0430m benefit from the rel\u0430tive irrelev\u0430nce of \u0440e\u0430ce.”<\/p>\n

Jones brings some of this on himself. His obsession with being “\u0430bove the fold” is re\u0430l, \u0430nd his unquestion\u0430ble m\u0430rketing genius in turning this into \u0430 $10 billion fr\u0430nchise is obviously not m\u0430tched by on-field \u0430ccom\u0440lishments, \u0430s D\u0430ll\u0430s rem\u0430ins in \u0430\u00a030-ye\u0430r\u00a0Su\u0440er Bowl\u00a0drought.<\/p>\n
