Many analysts figured that if the Dallas Cowboys didn\u2019t compete for a championship in 2024, that head coach Mike McCarthy would be on the hot seat.\u00a0 What not many considered is what Dallas might do in the event that Dak Prescott goes down with a season ending injury and Dallas still isn\u2019t competitive this season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prescott made it clear what he wants to have happen next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Jori Epstein\u00a0of Yahoo Sports:<\/p>\n

Dak Prescott feels \u201chelpless\u201d that he can\u2019t help Mike McCarthy fight for a Cowboys extension.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe definitely deserves a chance,\u201d Dak told me today. \u201cAnother contract & a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. On his terms.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cowboys quarterback can\u2019t meaningfully impact his team\u2019s performance as he\u00a0recovers from season-ending surgery to repair his hamstring tear. That bothers him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYour coach seems like he\u2019s playing on his last contract and [I\u2019m] almost feeling helpless like I can\u2019t help him in this situation, especially a guy you believe in so much and you believe in being your head coach,\u201d Prescott told Yahoo Sports during a Tuesday afternoon Zoom call. \u201cControl what I can control, help and support Mike to every extent that I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

In nine seasons with the Cowboys, Prescott has played for two head coaches. He leans on his experience watching Jason Garrett coach the final year of his deal in 2019 to manage this season. Prescott said he was glad to hear team owner and general manager\u00a0Jerry Jones say last week that it\u2019s \u201cnot crazy\u201d\u00a0to consider McCarthy returning for a sixth season and beyond.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
