On Sunday, as Major League Baseball\u2019s annual Winter Meetings were getting ready to kick off, Boston Red Sox fans on social media appeared to be consumed by pessimsim. \u201cBoston Strong,\u201d a popular Red Sox fan account on X (formerly Twitter) with more than 70,000 followers\u00a0started the day by posting, \u201cJuan Soto\u2019s decision is down to New York Mets and New York Yankees, per source.\u201d<\/p>\n
What the account\u2019s \u201csource\u201d was, it did not say or even hint. But the posting was followed by a series of others that were similarly pessimistic. \u201cRed Sox just never had a chance at getting Soto,\u201d\u00a0said one online poster.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that the Red Sox have lost out on Soto, it\u2019s clear they have a ton of money to spend,\u201d\u00a0said another. And so on.<\/p>\n
Red Sox Have Not \u2018Lost Out on Soto\u2019 \u2014 Yet<\/h2>\n
But early on Sunday afternoon, two veteran Red Sox reporters\u00a0writing for\u00a0MassLive<\/em>, Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo, injected a shot of hope for the Red Sox faithful. The club, they reported, has not in fact been ruled out of the Soto sweepstakes.<\/p>\n\u201cSo far, there\u2019s no reason to believe the Red Sox have been eliminated,\u201d the\u00a0MassLive<\/em> reporters wrote. \u201cAs of early Sunday afternoon, Boston is believed to remain in the mix for Soto with negotiations between the superstar and all interested teams hurdling toward a conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\nThe Red Sox management has made an \u201cA+ effort\u201d to bring Soto to Fenway Park, the report said. What it did not say was how much money, and how many years, the Red Sox have offered Soto \u2014 or even if Boston has made any final offer to Soto at all.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s unclear if final offers have been requested or submitted, though one person with knowledge of the negotiations said Sunday morning that all sides are \u2018at an interesting point in the talks,’\u201d Cotillo and McAdam reported.<\/p>\n
The offers for Soto that have been reported \u2014 though not independently confirmed \u2014 are reaching dizzying proportions \u2014 especially from the New York Mets. According to a social media posting by the\u00a0online business site\u00a0SpoTrac<\/em>, \u201cThe Mets are reportedly approaching $50 million per year with Juan Soto (15 yrs, $750 million).\u201d<\/p>\nSoto Set to Make More Than One Entire Team in 2025<\/h2>\n
The\u00a0SpoTrac<\/em>\u00a0post then pointed out that the Florida Marlins will very likely begin the 2025 season \u201cwith a 26-man roster that costs less than $50 million.\u201d<\/p>\nAccording to a report by another longtime baseball insider,\u00a0Jon Heyman, in\u00a0The New York Post<\/em>, both the New York Mets and New York Yankees \u201cremain heavily involved in the five-team Juan Soto Derby, with both clubs recently upping offers into the $710 million-$730 million range \u2014 MLB record territory.\u201d<\/p>\nThere has been no public indication to date that the Red Sox offer has reached those stratospheric heights. But there also has been no indication that it hasn\u2019t. There simply has been no new information coming out of the Red Sox camp at all. The\u00a0most recent report, also without independent confirmation, came about a week ago when it was reported that the Red Sox\u2019offer reached $600 million over 12 years.<\/p>\n
That proposed contract would also come out to an average annual salary of $50 million for Soto \u2014 meaning his decision could come down to whether he wants the security of an addition three years and $150 million more dollars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
