The loss to the division-rival Los Angeles Rams was a devastating blow to the San Francisco 49ers’ chances of being playoff-bound this season, as the immediate future looks bleak, to say the least, for the storied franchise.
Along with the 49ers trying to figure out how to get through the rest of the season, which has been incredibly disappointing after making it to the Super Bowl last season, San Francisco now has to deal with the situation with linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
Campbell refused to play against the Rams when called upon by head coach Kyle Shanahan, which is obviously something that needed to be addressed after the loss on “Thursday Night Football.”
Unsurprisingly, the 49ers didn’t take long to make a decision on Campbell’s future with the team, and they reportedly are moving on from the former All-Pro.
“Shanahan said they are working out the semantics of how. Suspension is an option, as is release,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport wrote on X.
One of the worst things an NFL player can do is refuse to play when asked because of feeling slighted by a demotion.
Campbell will likely live to regret this decision, as few teams in the league are going to want to bring in a player who quit on his team against a divisional opponent on “Thursday Night Football,” especially in a game as important as this, which was dictated by the play of the defense by both teams.
It will be interesting to see what the 49ers ultimately do with Campbell and what his future in the NFL holds.
