Novak Djokovic has shared his thoughts on the ongoing protests led by university students in Serbia, sparked by the tragic accident at a railway station in Novi Sad. The widespread demonstrations across Serbia erupted due to the growing dissatisfaction with President Aleksandar Vučić’s handling of the devastating incident.
On November 1, a concrete canopy collapsed at a railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in the death of 15 people. Many in Serbia blamed government corruption for the tragedy, alleging that negligence and haste during the renovation of the station caused the collapse.
University students have played a prominent role in the protests, demanding transparency by calling for the release of the documents related to the renovation. They staged blockades at 40 university faculties across Serbia, forcing classes to be suspended for days until their demands were met. Students also protested against the state-run RTS television for spreading government propaganda that claimed the demonstrations were backed by the West.
Novak Djokovic recently took to social media and shared his perspective on the protests, emphasizing the importance of youth empowerment and the need for their voices to be heard. The 24-time Grand Slam champion also called for understanding and respect as he deemed the “educated youth” of Serbia as the country’s most valuable asset.
“As someone who deeply believes in the strength of young people and their desire for a better future, I believe it is important for their voices to be heard. Serbia has enormous potential and educated youth is its greatest strength. What we all need is understanding and respect. With you, Novak,” Djokovic posted on X (Translated from Serbian).
Djokovic was devastated by the news of the tragic railway station collapse in Novi Sad when the incident occurred, sending his “deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the victims’ families” in a heartfelt message.
