The Miami Dolphins will go a third consecutive Sunday without activating Pro Bowl edge rusher Bradley Chubb since his return to practice after a year-long rehab from a significant knee injury.
While the Dolphins did not bring Chubb back from the physically-unable-to-perform list Saturday, they did activate fellow outside linebacker Cameron Goode, who is set to make his season debut Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers after also making a lengthy rehab, tearing the patellar tendon in a knee Jan. 6.
Miami has until Tuesday, the conclusion of Chubb’s 21-day practice window since he returned to practice Dec. 4, to activate Chubb or he’s out for the remainder of the season. If the Dolphins lose to the 49ers, it would eliminate them from postseason contention, possibly making that decision easier.
Chubb said he “tore my ACL, my patella and my meniscus” on Dec. 31 last season against the Baltimore Ravens, had surgery and rehabbed for nearly 11 months before returning to the practice field.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that Goode, whose knee injury occurred seven days later, was ahead of Chubb in a possible return to play.
In order to make room on the roster, Miami waived defensive tackle Neil Farrell.
The Dolphins elevated third-year wide receiver Erik Ezukanma from the practice squad to the game-day roster for Sunday against San Francisco. Ezukanma provides depth for a Miami receiving corps that has Jaylen Waddle and Dee Eskridge doubtful and Tyreek Hill questionable, along with the available Malik Washington and River Cracraft. Ezukanma got the call-up over the recently signed Isaiah McKenzie.
With Chubb out Sunday and Goode cleared to play, the Dolphins added outside linebacker Quinton Bell to the injury report Saturday, due to an illness.
Houston Texans safety Calen Bullock was fined $11,832 for two unnecessary roughness penalties in last Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, according to NFL Network on Saturday.
One of Bullock’s violations came on the hit that hospitalized Miami wide receiver Grant DuBose in a scary scene where he was motionless on the field and taken away on a stretcher.
