Novak Djokovic might not win the 2025 Australian Open as lack of motivation has become one of his biggest opponents..

Novak Djokovic is seeking to win his 25th Grand Slam at the Australian Open next year. Indeed, he has already made his intentions clear of winning after appointing Andy Murray as his new coach. The Serbian is also going to play at the Brisbane International for the first time since 2009, as he aims to use the tournament as a warm-up for the Australian Open.

Also, he will be playing in the doubles of the Brisbane International alongside Nick Kyrgios. The 37-year-old has witnessed his rivals Murray and Rafael Nadal retire from the sport this year, but is still optimistic that he can play at the highest level despite his age.

In this article, we will take a detailed look at the three reasons why Djokovic might not be able to win the 2025 Australian Open.

3) Novak Djokovic’s current form

The 24-time major champion was brilliant in 2023, winning three of the four majors but failed to hit the expectations of fans the following year. In the 2024 season, Djokovic failed to win a Grand Slam title for the first time in seven years. In fact, he ended the season without a tour-level title.

His only success came at the Paris Olympics, where he fought hard to beat Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets and claim his elusive gold medal. After that, he never reached a tournament final until October in Shanghai. It was his third final of the season yet he succumbed to a disappointing loss against Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic has not played any competitive match since then, as he skipped the Paris Masters and withdrew from the Nitto ATP Finals due to injury.

2) The rise of a new generation of players

For the first time in several years, Djokovic will not enter the Australian Open as the clear favorite. Sinner, the World No.1 who defeated him at the event in January this year, is the leading star of the event. Also, Alcaraz is a top favorite to win the title over Djokovic.

Besides that, 2024 proved that the end of the Big 4 era has come to an end. After over twenty years of dominating the sport, a new generation of players have taken centrestage. Alcaraz and Sinner are now the two pioneers who are set to lead the tennis world to a new era. This season, they dominated the men’s tennis, winning 12 titles combined.

Also, they won all four Grand Slam titles between themselves, with Alcaraz claiming the French Open and Wimbledon, while Sinner won the Australian Open and US Open. With their current form and young age, they are sure to stop Djokovic from winning in Melbourne next year.

1) Novak Djokovic’s motivation might be a cause for concern

Motivation has become one of the biggest opponents of Djokovic. Despite admitting his desire to compete at the highest level of the game, his lack of appetite sometimes let him down. This year, he skipped several ATP Masters events and decided not to play at the ATP Finals due to injury.

However, the arrival of Murray in his team may give him fuel if he decides to prove himself on the court. But that may not be enough to take him to the finishing line. The Serbian has won virtually everything the sport can offer and will be the greatest player of the game, but it might prove to be a hindrance to his hunger for more records and titles.
