The New York Yankees might not be ready to part ways with Anthony Rizzo just yet. Due to various factors, Rizzo’s 2024 season was not up to the mark. Injuries have been one of the sole reasons for his downfall. Plus, every MLB fan is aware of Rizzo and Cole’s blunder during Game 5 of the World Series.

While that has been put in the past, the Yanks have moved on and are all set to battle a new 2025 season. The team has made huge changes despite missing out on Juan Soto to the Mets. The Yanks have added former MVPs, All-Stars, and World Series winners and are still hungry.

Previously, it was believed that the Yanks were not too interested in Anthony Rizzo. The Yanks announced they had declined Rizzo’s $17 million club option for 2025. Rizzo became a free agent, but there seems to have been a turn of events in the past few days.

The Yankees are continuing to add star players, and General Manager Brian Cashman said he’s not fully out on Rizzo. Cashman had discussions with Rizzo’s agent and is waiting patiently for the right time.

“I have had conversions with his agent, Marc Pollack. Rizzo loved being here. I can’t close the door on any free agent. I’ll let the winter play out. We have choices now with the Cody import and Ben being here, but I know Rizzo was also very highly respected in our clubhouse. So let’s wait and see how everything transpires,” Cashman said via Sporting News.

Yankees To Consider Other Options Apart From Anthony Rizzo

Cashman might be right, but the team has been hooked to a couple of first basemen since the beginning of this offseason. The Bronx Bombers are considering other options apart from Anthony Rizzo. They have been linked to Christian Walker and Pete Alonso.

Cashman’s latest statement is clear. They have choices but are waiting for the winter to play out. That said, they might try to pick up another younger first baseman before going all out for Rizzo.

It’s hard to see Rizzo in another uniform, but the Yankees have been creative in their signing process this offseason. With young stars like Ben Rice in line, they could probably opt for a one-year deal with Rizzo. The Yanks have also kept their eyes on Pete Alonso.
