Hey, Cowboys Nation, you asked to see Trey Lance in a real game. The Dallas Cowboys gave that Christmas gift to you on Sunday in Philadelphia.
Why so glum?
Yes, former high-first-round pick Lance finally got some snaps in a real game in a real Cowboys uniform. But it happened – after an achingly long two years – with just a few ticks left in what was a 41-7 blowout loss at the hands of the dominant Philadelphia Eagles.
Lance entered the lopsided game with just over two minutes remaining. He completed one pass for one yard in the brief appearance, all of which left Cowboys Nation …
Wanting more?
Wondering if he could’ve helped the cause by actually being used as a weapon?
Thinking that maybe he might have, on this day, played at a higher level than the struggling Cooper Rush, the starter in place of the injured Dak Prescott?
Scratching its collective head wondering why in 2023 he was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick but then was stored in mothballs ever since?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
The former third-overall pick always promised athleticism but rarely showed much else during his 2024 preseason game chances. And never over the course of the two years did he threaten Cooper Rush’s spot on the depth chart.
So … now that he (like Rush) is set to be a free agent after this season … what was the point again?
Lance in the preseason completed 73 of 113 passes with 662 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and five interceptions. He did add 24 carries for 168 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
The Cowboys, from owner Jerry Jones on down, talked of inserting Lance into games as a “special package.” But it turned out to be as bogus as his offseason promise of “all in.”
Rush remains a very sound backup who simply got overextended here. And Lance? What is he? Who knows?
It’s not just fans who are wondering about all of this. Cowboys media voices are as well.
“Hey uh. Cowboys are getting their doors blown off in a game that already had no impact on the standings. Why isn’t Trey Lance finishing this out?” David Helman of Fox Sports wrote on X.
