Boris Becker sends supportive message to Jannik Sinner amid Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios reigniting doping controversy

Boris Becker recently showed his support for Jannik Sinner after Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios reignited the Italian’s doping controversy. Sinner tested positive for the prohibited substance clostebol twice in March 2024.

Sinner’s testing positive for the banned substance came to light after an investigation by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). He then appealed the ITIA’s ruling, after which an independent tribunal later found that he was not at fault for the Anti-Doping Rule Violations and therefore faced no punishment.

Following the news of Sinner’s positive tests, the likes of Nick Kyrgios and many other players were quick to criticize him. Most recently, Novak Djokovic spoke to the press about players being treated differently during their doping trials and he also expressed his frustration with the lack of transparency from governing bodies.

In response to Djokovic and Kyrgios reigniting the doping scandal, German tennis legend Boris Becker took to social media and re-shared a post which seemingly debunked the theory that Sinner had gotten preferential treatment during his doping trials.

Becker stated that it was important to understand all the facts of a case before passing judgment on the situation .

“We should take time and read the facts !” Becker posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

During a recent press conference, Nick Kyrgios said that a player, alluding to Jannik Sinner, who cheats by doping and wins matches not on their own merit is “disrespectful” to tennis.

“So for me when people are saying that I’m disrespectful to the sport, I think someone like that that has tried to cheat the process, and actually not done it completely on their own merit, is the disrespectful one in my opinion,” Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios stated that he has been critical about Sinner’s doping controversy because he believes that not many people are talking about it

“But, yeah, I mean, I have to be outspoken about it because I don’t think there’s enough people that are speaking about it. I think people are trying to sweep it under the rug and saying that about the amount and all this. I’m not going to shut up about it anyway,” he added

Looking ahead, Sinner will begin his 2025 season at the Australian Open, where he will be defending his title. The World No.1 claimed the title in Melbourne in 2024 by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final.

On the other hand, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios have already begun their 2025 season at the Brisbane International. The two players have even joined forces to compete in the doubles event and have already won their first-round match against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies.

Next up, Djokovic and Kyrgios will face the top-seeded pair of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in the second round.
