Entering Week 17, the Cowboys won four of their last five games.
McCarthy’s contract officially expires after the season as Dallas was officially eliminated from playoff contention before their Week 16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
During Fox NFL Sunday, insider Jay Glazer shared that he expects Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to meet with McCarthy shortly after the regular season ends.
Glazer added that if McCarthy isn’t given a contract extension, then there will be other teams that will have the Super Bowl champion coach on their list of head coaching candidates.
The former Dallas head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Johnson then made a declaration of the live TV show.
“I think he will be the Cowboys coach next year and he deserves to be the Cowboys coach,” Johnson said.
Fox co-star Michael Strahan was surprised with Johnson’s take, asking him, “Really?”
Glazer wasn’t the only insider that gave an update on the situation between McCarthy and the Cowboys.
Before the Cowboys’ Week 17 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter claimed the ball was partly in the coach’s court.
“It goes both ways,” Schefter said.
“Jerry Jones has got to decide if he wants to renew him.
“But Mike McCarthy can go and talk to whoever he wants about a head coaching job.
“He can go and listen to the New Orleans Saints or New York Jets, or any team that has an opening and wants to talk to him.”
Schefter speculated that Jones is interested in potentially extending McCarthy but is “reviewing his options.”
Dallas lost 41-7 to the Eagles in a blowout contest.
McCarthy has been the Cowboys coach for four years after previously leading the Green Bay Packers.
He has a 1-3 playoff record in Dallas.
McCarthy won the Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback in 2010.
