Brock Purdy is approaching a time when he is about to start contract negotiations with the San Francisco 49ers about his next paycheck. With numbers rumored to start at $50 million a year, longtime analyst Colin Cowherd has his reservations.
Before the start of this season, many touted Purdy to take a major leap in cementing his franchise quarterback tag. But injuries to key offensive personnel led to an overall lack of fluidity from that group. That had an impact on the QB’s numbers as they declined compared to last season.
However, he has managed to come close to last season’s total yards and has run better this season. But despite all that, his 49ers are 4-10 this season and questions have again cropped about him being a system quarterback. Colin Cowherd was speaking on The Herd and used that reference to say this.
The longtime analyst added that Brock Purdy is equivalent to a B quarterback as he needs a lot of good things to go right for him to succeed. That should give enough indication to the San Francisco 49ers that he is not worth the $50 million mark that he is reportedly expecting.
Brock Purdy avoids serious injury in loss to Lions
Brock Purdy had an unreal first half against the Detroit Lions. But in the second half, he threw two interceptions that led to the loss. To make matters worse, he left the game with an injury with time to spare. After learning about the results from scans and checkups ESPN’s Nick Wagoner came out with this update.
This news should give some respite to the QB after injuries derailed his Cinderella debut season. With his contract negotiations about to start any time soon, an injury will only go to hamper him. He is reportedly looking for a staggering amount, but his play this season has not backed it up.
An injury history could have given the San Francisco 49ers leverage in trying to bring the price down. Even then, as Colin Cowherd suggested, $30-35 million sounds better for the franchise as their starter has yet to show he is elite.
