The Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 18, the final week of the regular season, having clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC and feeling good about themselves … as long as they can put the icy conditions at the KC airport behind them.
Also needing to be stashed away, though, might be one pleasant oddity from a week ago.
Kansas City is 15-1 on the year after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10 on Christmas Day. In that game, all-time great tight end got into the end zone – what else is new – and after he grabbed a historically important touchdown catch, he trotted over to the goal post crossbar …
And dunked the ball.
And that’s a problem?
The NFL on Saturday issued an announcement regarding Kelce, releasing information on the punishment for the veteran for having been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
That fine? A whopping $14,069.
The reason it was worth it? The dunk was an homage to NFL legend Tony Gonzalez, the former Chiefs tight end, who had owned his franchise record for touchdown receptions at 76.
Kelce, at that moment, got to 77 receiving touchdowns in his career with the Chiefs.
After the win over the Steelers, Kelce remarked on his level of awareness of that being a fine-worthy offense … as silly as that might be to the casual watcher of the No Fun League.
“You know I had to show love to the greatest of all time!! you did mention you’d help me with the fine tho,” Kelce stated, meaning that Gonzalez will be pitching in some dough.
Kelce in that game recorded one touchdown and 84 yards on eight catches. For the year, he has three touchdowns and 823 yards on 97 receptions … and he is the top Pro Bowl vote-getter, in part because of his legendary status and in part because Swifties (fans of his girlfriend Taylor Swift) surely stuffed those ballot boxes.
