The Chiefs announced a roster move on Tuesday during the playoff bye week. Kansas City won’t suit up again until the Divisional Round, though the team is still focused on fielding the best possible roster for a chance at the first Super Bowl three-peat in NFL history.

2022 fifth-round WR Montrell Washington, who was originally drafted by Denver but has spent the last two years primarily with the Chiefs, was re-signed to the practice squad ahead of Wild Card Weekend.

Washington has never appeared in a game for Kansas City yet his experience with the organization and offensive scheme is a plus. Should the Chiefs suffer an injury in the coming weeks, Washington has value at receiver and on special teams as well.

In a corresponding move, LB Blake Lynch was released. Deeper intentions were at play and this was reportedly the plan all along according to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest.

Since Cole Christiansen and Swayze Bozeman had already used up their respective practice squad elevations, Lynch was elevated for Week 18. The Chiefs had just released Washington on December 30, so the quick turnaround in re-signing him suggests Derrick’s reporting is correct.

Washington has just four catches for two yards in his career. All of the receptions came during his rookie campaign with Denver, though Kansas City’s coaching staff clearly trusts him enough to add him as insurance down the stretch.

Hopefully, there won’t be any reason for Washington to make any kind of an impact in the playoffs. Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, Justin Watson, and theoretically Mecole Hardman are all firmly ahead of the depth chart, meaning multiple injuries would likely need to happen in order for Washington to play in a postseason game.

It’s still wise for the team to make contingency plans, and this one has apparently been in place for multiple weeks. Either way, the Chiefs are well-positioned to hoist another Lombardi Trophy, holding the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl (+375) at FanDuel Sportsbook.
