Travis Kelce picked up a hefty fine.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has solidified his place as one of the most dominant and accomplished players in NFL history at his position. However, he’s also no stranger to unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, as evidenced by one he picked up a couple of weeks ago.
During Kansas City’s Christmas Day matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Travis Kelce made some history by breaking the franchise record for touchdown receptions, which was previously held by Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez.
It was a momentous occasion for the superstar tight end. But unfortunately for him, his touchdown celebration did not go over all that well with the league.
After scoring the record-breaking touchdown, Kelce grabbed the ball, ran to the goalposts, and dunked it over the crossbar. According to the league rules, however, this is not permitted and it resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
To make matters worse for Kelce, the punishment didn’t end there as the NFL further dropped the hammer on him by giving him a pretty substantial fine.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Kelce was fined $14,069 for violating league rules by using a prop during his celebration.
“The NFL fined #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce $14,069 for unsportsmanlike conduct (use of prop) — dunking over the crossbar on Christmas in tribute to Tony Gonzalez after breaking his franchise TD record,” Pelissero shared in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Gonzalez posted he’ll help with the fine,” Pelissero added.
With the Chiefs securing the No. 1 seed in the postseason, Kelce is now shifting his focus to the playoffs.
While Kelce himself is having the worst year of his entire career statistically, the team is still chasing its unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title and is in a great position to accomplish that goal.
Additionally, Kelce actually made the Pro Bowl once again this year despite his lackluster performance on the field. This is thanks to some overwhelming support that he received from fans and Swifties, leading the fan voting.
We’ll have to see how Kelce and the Chiefs are able to perform in the playoffs as they attempt to make history with a third straight Super Bowl title – something that has never been done before in the history of the league.
