The Dallas Cowboys suffered a crushing last-second 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 18 to finish the 2024 campaign with a 7-10 record. And as the team heads into the offseason, all eyes are on head coach Mike McCarthy, who’s future with the team is very much up in the air.

McCarthy entered the season without a contract in place for 2025, indicating that he was coaching for his job with the team this season. It’s safe to say that the team did not meet expectations this year, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has not sounded like a guy who wants to fire McCarthy in recent weeks.

However, McCarthy could opt to leave Dallas himself and take a head coaching gig elsewhere, and there is interest in him, as evidenced by the Chicago Bears recently requesting to interview him for their head coach opening. Amid all the chaos, though, the Cowboys reportedly haven’t made any decisions regarding McCarthy just yet.

“Quick status check on Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy: ‘No decision,’” Josina Anderson said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Cowboys are in a very unique position with McCarthy. They have the inside track to keep him in town since they have an exclusive negotiating period with him, but nobody knows whether or not that’s what they want to do yet. That has left a team like Chicago in the dark, as Dallas hasn’t responded to their interview request yet.

It’s not a bad thing for the Cowboys to take their time with McCarthy, but they are going to have to figure things out sooner rather than later, or else they could find themselves without a head coach and well behind other teams in the hiring process.

For now, nobody knows what Dallas is doing when it comes to McCarthy, but considering how fast other teams are moving with their head coach hiring processes, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team make a decision in the near future.
