The Los Angeles Dodgers trading for All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado won’t be happening this winter, according to the latest report. In fact, the Dodgers reportedly never participated in trade talks surrounding the 10-time Gold Glove winner.
Per The Athletic’s Katie Woo, the Dodgers “were long believed to be a top choice for the Southern California native, but they were not engaged in Arenado talks this winter.”
The Dodgers were quickly linked to Arenado after he posted a series of photos on his Instagram along with the song “dodger blue” by Kendrick Lamar. While it is no secret Arenado wants to join a contender, it won’t be with the reigning World Series champion Dodgers.
As the rumor mill sent sparked a trade buzz, the fate of Max Muncy was immediately a topic of discussion. However, it seems those rumors can be put to rest as Arenado will likely stay in St. Louis.
Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, who has been transparent about the organization’s desire to trade Arenado for financial relief, gave a grim update about Arenado’s chances of joining a championship caliber team.
“The update would be it’s been very quiet,” Mozeliak said in a recent interview on KMOX. “If we have the ability to find him a place he desires, it’s something we are going to try to do. If not, he will have to be a part of our club moving forward.”
Since Arenado nixed a trade to the Houston Astros, his opportunities to leave St. Louis have decreased significantly. The Cardinals won’t trade Arenado unless the team he goes to is willing to take on a majority of his remaining salary. The Astros had agreed to do so, but quickly pivoted to signing first baseman Christian Walker after Arenado declined the trade.
Now, Arenado and the Cardinals could be stuck with each other until at least the trade deadline in July. As for Arenado joining the Dodgers, it now seems like a dream rather than reality.
