FRISCO – Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty put together an historic 2024 season by rushing for over 2,600 yards and 29 touchdowns on his way to finishing as the runner-up for Heisman Trophy honors.
And for his next act?
“I would love to play for the Cowboys,” the Frisco kid reiterated this weekend. “It would be like a dream come true.”
This is not a new take; Jeanty has expressed this thought before. But now that Dallas has the No. 12 overall pick in the April NFL Draft?
It’s beginning to add up, more and more.
“It would just feel like I’m at home, honestly,” the former Frisco high school star said, reflecting on the idea of being able to set up shop here at The Star, where he played some of his prep games. “I ain’t going to say too much, but Dallas they’ve always had a good running back, and when they have a good running back they play a lot better.”
Rico Dowdle was Dallas top guy this year, racking up 1,079 yards rushing. But he is a free agent, and as much as the Cowboys might like him back, he did not put up breakaway numbers.
Jeanty, meanwhile, in his college career had 63 runs of 10-plus yards and 36 runs of 15-plus yards this season, per PFF, which writes, “Beyond just the overall output, he was also incredibly efficient, with a 96.6 PFF rushing grade, a 99th-percentile missed tackles forced per attempt figure and a 98th-percentile yards after contact number. He is one of the best football players in the draft, and Dallas needs a player like that badly on its offense.”
Jeanty’s comments in this video going viral do ring true.
There is a first-round running back history here. Duane Thomas and Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith and Ezekiel Elliott …
And maybe now another one on the way.
