The New York Yankees used to have allure, aura, and mystique as a franchise. Still, Yankees Unloaded podcast host Gary Sheffield, Jr. thinks that if all is gone, After news broke that Japanese star Roki Sasaki had told the Yankees he was not going to sign there, Sheffield, the son of the former Yankee outfielder, said that the team had spent all its allure.
“The Yankees have zero allure and that’s perfectly okay to admit. Has to be earned on the field if they want it back to win free agency,” Sheffield posted on X.
“Allure shouldn’t last forever. The New England Patriots had it under Brady and now the only way to return is to win first.
“Nothing should be controversial about this statement being the simplicity as to what creates allure,” Sheffield added in another post.
While the Yankees are coming off their first World Series appearance in 15 years, they have struggled to compete in the offseason this winter and, to be fair, in recent years.
The Yankees and San Francisco Giants were told Monday that they are out of the running for Sasaki, the 23-year-old phenom from Japan. It’s another swing-and-miss for the Yankees on top free agents.
Earlier this winter, they could not convince top free agent slugger Juan Soto to re-sign for $760 million. Instead, after one season in pinstripes, Soto bolted across town to the New York Mets on a $765 million deal.
Last winter, the Yankees could not get themselves in serious contention for Shohei Ohtani, who signed a $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, nor could they land top Japanese pitching free agent Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who also signed with the Dodgers for $325 million.
They did sign the top free agent of the 2022 offseason but had an emotional advantage with Aaron Judge, who wanted to stay with the Yankees.
