Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wife, Brittany Mahomes, recently introduced their third child to the world, but it was the name they chose for their daughter that quickly sparked interest.
The couple, known for their unique approach to naming their kids, have chosen to continue their trend of metal-inspired names.
Their latest addition, a baby girl born on Jan. 12, is named Golden Raye, joining her older siblings—daughter Sterling Skye, 3 and son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, 2.
While the names might seem to follow a metal theme, the story behind them is more heartfelt than it appears.
Brittany Mahomes has openly shared that the inspiration for the family’s naming tradition came from her beloved dogs, Steel and Silver.
According to E! News, Brittany Mahomes explained in an April 2023 Instagram story that she named her dog Steel while in college and then wanted to name a future pet Sterling to go with it.
However, she saved the name Sterling for her daughter.
“Then we got another dog, and I wanted to name her Sterling because it went with Steel perfectly. But I decided to save that name for my daughter,” she said.
The name Bronze for their son also has a special connection. In a Nov. 2022 press conference, Patrick Mahomes revealed that the idea of naming their son Bronze came from his younger brother, Jackson Mahomes, per TMZ.
“Jackson suggested Bronze to match Sterling, and it fit perfectly,” Patrick Mahomes explained.
“It works out well because now Sterling and Bronze can have that connection moving forward.”
Although the metal-based names have raised some eyebrows, with some fans joking about the potential for sibling rivalry, the Mahomes family sees their children’s names as a meaningful tradition.
Brittany Mahomes shared with PEOPLE in 2024 that Steel was actually a gift from Patrick Mahomes to her while she was in college and she chose the name because she was once a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As the Mahomes family continues to grow, fans are eager to see how the siblings, including little Golden Raye, will carry on the metal-inspired legacy that has captured the hearts of so many.
