The Boston Red Sox are still in the market for relievers and on Jan. 17 the team made another depth signing to bolster the bullpen.
The Red Sox and lefty Sean Newcomb have agreed to a minor league deal, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Newcomb, 31, is a former first-round pick, drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2014. The lefty is a native of Brockton, MA.
Newcomb has received an invitation to big league spring training. Cotillo reported a few other non-roster invitees along with his signing: Austin Adams, Robert Stock, Yovanny Cruz and Noah Davis.
Newcomb debuted for the Atlanta Braves in 2017 and has appeared in the big leagues at least four times in every season since. He has a career 4.51 ERA over 175 appearances for three different teams.

The Braves acquired Newcomb as part of their return in the 2015 Andrelton Simmons trade with the Angels. The lefty spent five and a half seasons with Atlanta and had success as a starter from 2015-19, when he was moved to the bullpen.
Most recently, the former top prospect suited up for the A’s. His 2024 campaign didn’t go so well — he posted a 6.30 ERA with even strikeouts, eight walks and two home runs surrendered in 10 innings. Newcomb clocked a 3.00 with 17 strikeouts and nine walks across 15 innings in the majors in 2023.
Newcomb’s best year in the major leagues came in 2018 when he logged a 3.90 ERA with 160 strikeouts and 81 walks over 164 innings. He made 30 starts and one relief appearance in his longest season in the big leagues. He hasn’t pitched more than 32.1 major league innings since 2019.
