resident Donald Trump congratulated the Kansas City Chiefs after their AFC Championship victory Sunday night, praising the team, coach, quarterback, and fans for qualifying for the Super Bowl.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, “Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs. What a GREAT Team, Coach, Quarterback, and virtually everything else, including those fantastic FANS, that voted for me (MAGA!) in record numbers.”
Newsweek has contacted the Kansas City Chiefs and the White House via email for comment.
Why It Matters
Trump’s comments about Chiefs fans “voting for me in record numbers” could be a reference to his support in Kansas and Missouri in November’s election. While he did comfortably win both states, former Vice President Kamala Harris won the Kansas City Metro Area.
Prior to the election, there was public speculation about the political leanings of Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. The latter is dating pop star Taylor Swift, who endorsed Harris, while Mahomes refrained from endorsing any candidate. Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, had previously faced backlash after liking social media posts by Trump in August 2024.
What To Know
Trump’s congratulatory message followed a dramatic AFC Championship game where Mahomes delivered a standout performance with 245 yards passing and a touchdown through the air, as well as two more on the ground.
The Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills for the fourth time in the playoffs since 2021, solidifying their dominance in the AFC.
Trump’s comments also referenced the Chiefs’ fan base, which spans the Republican stronghold states of Kansas and Missouri. The Kansas City Metro Area is one of the most Democrat-leaning areas in both states, and was one of the few areas that supported Harris.
Ahead of the election, Mahomes declined to endorse a candidate, saying: “I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote … and make the best decision for them and their family.” Kelce’s partner, Swift, publicly endorsed Harris, citing her belief in the vice president’s leadership qualities and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and women’s health care. After her endorsement, Trump wrote “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,” on Truth Social.
He has previously spoken positively about Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, telling Fox News she was a “big Trump fan” after she liked one of his posts on social media.
