Insider Throws Cold Water on Boston Red Sox Eventual Pursuit of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason looking to improve. They’ve done so with the additions of Garrett Crochet and others, but they need more.

Alex Bregman could be an option, but with him still on the market, it’s uncertain if the Red Sox will ever get a deal done for the two-time World Series champion.

Looking ahead, Boston could look to save money and spend elsewhere. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to hit the free agency market next winter if the Toronto Blue Jays don’t extend him.

Guerrero is someone the Red Sox are interested in, and there’s an outside chance it could be impacting who they’re looking to sign right now.

However, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, she doesn’t believe that’s playing any role in Boston not landing Nolan Arenado or Bregman.

“We got a lot of questions about whether the team is strategically not signing Bregman or trading for Nolan Arenado because they’re eyeing Guerrero, who’s set to hit free agency after the 2025 season. I get the idea, and it makes sense in theory, but teams rarely plan things that way because there are so many variables at play — whether Guerrero remains healthy, whether he actually wants to sign with the club, whether the Dodgers come through and offer a billion dollars, etc,” McCaffrey wrote.

Saving money for Guerrero would be ideal, but there’s no guarantee he will become available. The Red Sox would also have tough competition for the slugger, given he’s one of the better hitters in baseball.

Coming off a .323/.396/.544 and 30 home run showing, he’d be an excellent addition to Boston.

Still, that shouldn’t stop the Red Sox from improving right now.
