Two-time All-Star Alex Bregman appears to be headed towards divorce with his longtime team.
Bregman has spent his entire career with the Houston Astros, but general manager Dana Brown appeared to indicate the team had “lost” Bregman in comments to reporters this week, according to insider Chandler Rome.
“During his address at the team’s annual media luncheon, Dana Brown twice spoke about Alex Bregman in the past tense, saying once that the team ‘lost Bregman,'” Rome reported. ”
While Brown sounded pessimistic about a deal coming together another team was busy getting in on the action. Late Tuesday afternoon the Chicago Cubs jumped into the mix with a strong offer for the Gold Glove winner.
“Sources have confirmed that the Cubs have offered Alex Bregman a four-year contract, with opt-outs, worth north of $100 million,” Jacob Zanolla of RealCubsInsider reported.
On the heels of that report, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report predicted Bregman will land with the historic club.
“The Cubs also have a star prospect to keep in mind, as signing Bregman would mean keeping Matt Shaw—MLB.com’s No. 19 prospect—on the back burner after a 2024 campaign in which he excelled at both Double-A and Triple-A,” Miller said in the prediction.
“They are all-in on winning right now, though, with their one year of Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, and they would be kicking themselves later if they don’t sign Bregman and Shaw’s foray into the majors goes as poorly at Brett Baty’s did. Purely a hunch, but Chicago having a little more desperation/need pushes them over the top.”
During the 2024 season, Bregman posted a .768 OPS in 145 games while batting .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs.
