Rafael Nadal saw his wealth increase by £78million (€94.1m) in 2023 after selling a significant portion of his tennis academy.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Nadal amassed a considerable fortune during his career, clinching 22 Grand Slam titles before hanging up his racket after last year’s Davis Cup. However, a large chunk of his current wealth stems from the sale of nearly half of his Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca.

The 38-year-old managed to rake in £78m through his holding company Aspemir in 2023, marking a staggering 373 per cent increase in revenue compared to the previous year. The surge of income is largely attributed to Nadal offloading 44.9 per cent of his shares in the Centre Sportiu Manacor to GPF Capital.

The Rafa Nadal Academy provides training and accommodation for budding tennis stars, alongside a host of other services in the health and hospitality sectors. It also features a private clinic and a museum showcasing memorabilia from Nadal’s illustrious career.

Despite selling a substantial stake to GPF Capital, Nadal still retains a 55.1 per cent share in the venture. According to the ATP’s prize money leaderboard, Nadal – who reportedly has a net worth of around £175m – earned up to £103m in tournament winnings over his career.

However, his earnings have been significantly boosted over the years through lucrative sponsorship deals, endorsements, and special appearances, reports the Express. Despite raking in millions, Nadal has always preferred the comfort of his roots over a lavish lifestyle, living in a modest five-storey apartment with his extended family until he was 21.

Despite having moved out, Nadal hasn’t strayed far from home, residing in Manacor, Mallorca. In 2012, he invested £33m in a luxurious mansion and also acquired a holiday villa in Playa Nueva Romana in the Dominican Republic.

Unlike many of his peers, Nadal hasn’t built an extensive property empire, but for his 34th birthday in 2020, he indulged in a stunning yacht worth around £5m, nicknamed the ‘Great White’. The nautical marvel reflects Nadal’s personal taste, with its interior adorned in soothing cream, beige, and brown shades.

Perfect for entertaining, the yacht features four guest cabins that sleep eight people comfortably, and the master suite boasts a walk-in wardrobe. Additional luxuries include a fold-down balcony, indoor and outdoor dining areas, plenty of TVs, and even a garage for jet skis.

Previously owning smaller yachts, Nadal aimed for something more akin to a home on the water, choosing the largest yacht that could be docked in Porto Cristo. On buying the ‘Great White’, Nadal said: “I wanted to feel like in my own house.

“Of course I had some special requests. I didn’t want a hot tub on the flybridge, because I prefer open spaces. I don’t need features like jacuzzis on board – I have water around the boat to swim in and enjoy.”
