With the free agent market dwindling, the obvious best available player is longtime Houston Astros All-Star Alex Bregman.
The Boston Red Sox are among the teams that are reportedly in on Bregman, and they might be able to rule a certain team out after a report by Robert Murray of FanSided.
In an article on Friday, Murray revealed that the Astros could be out on the two-time All-Star third baseman.
“What is clear, however, is we’re not close to a Bregman resolution.
“Where he ends up remains a mystery, but with the Astros seemingly out of the sweepstakes, that leaves the Cubs or Tigers – or potentially a mystery team – in line to swoop him out of Houston,” Murray wrote.
The Astros were reportedly Bregman’s top choice if the team could agree on a long-term contract for six to seven years, which is what Bregman wants.
However, Houston made a significant offer to Bregman earlier in the offseason, and he declined it, leading many to believe Houston may be out of the race.
This leaves the door wide open for the Red Sox, who have been seeking a right-handed slugger all offseason and need to bolster their left-handed heavy lineup.
One thing seems true about Bregman’s free agency situation: the Detroit Tigers, Cubs, and Red Sox are still in the mix.
For the Red Sox, however, they might be able to cross the Astros off the list of competitors in the sweepstakes and focus on getting the checkbook out and offering Bregman the six or seven-year contract that he wants.
