Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has been a popular head coaching candidate over the past couple of hiring cycles.
Now, he’s off the market, but not as a head coach. Instead, he’ll be heading to South Florida to join the Dolphins as their senior passing game coordinator.
Slowik, who interviewed this year with the Jets for their head coaching job, was let go as the Texans’ offensive coordinator last month after his second season. That was a curious move, as under Slowik’s guidance, C.J. Stroud won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and the Texans had one of the most surprisingly good offenses in the NFL.
Things dropped off sharply in 2024, but it’s hard to say that was all Slowik’s fault. The Texans’ offensive line was simply subpar, and that had a ripple effect on the entire offense. Ultimately, that reason wasn’t enough to save Slowik’s job.
Still, any time you can add someone with the experience and success that Slowik has had – and someone that’s had enough interest in franchises to earn multiple head coaching interviews – you gladly take it if you have room, and the Dolphins do.
The Dolphins still have Frank Smith as their offensive coordinator, and Mike McDaniel will still call the plays. However, Miami could use some fresh eyes and a new voice in trying to figure out this offseason how to reestablish the deep passing game that opposing teams largely managed to bottle up in 2024.
Slowik will be joining his brother on staff. Ryan is the current defensive backs coach and defensive pass game specialist. Slowik and McDaniel also served together in San Francisco on Kyle Shanahan’s staff from 2017-2021.
