“BREAKING: Yankees’ Surprising Potential Trade for $15-Million Third Baseman!”

With Alex Bregman agreeing to a three-year deal with the Boston Red Sox late Wednesday night, the market for third baseman should loosen up. The New York Yankees have a chance to look for an upgrade at the position without breaking the bank and tying themselves to a long-term commitment.

But do not expect them to trade for Nolan Arenado.

The New York Yankees should be a good fit for Nolan Arenado, at least on paper, but clearly, the Yankees see something that they do not like.

While reports out of the St. Louis Cardinals camp say they “expect” talks to intensify with the Yankees after Alex Bregman’s signing with the Boston Red Sox, it does not seem likely. ESPN Insider Buster Olney added his voice to the chorus of reporters connected to the Yankees’ front office who say there is no interest.

“Nolan Arenado moves to the forefront in the third base market, now that Bregman is off the board. The Yankees have not been engaged in conversations with the Cardinals about him,” Olney posted on X.com after Bregman’s signing.

YES reporter Jack Curry, who has covered the Yankees for decades, SNY’s Andy Martino, who just wrote a book on the Yankees under General Manager Brian Cashman, and ESPN Insider Jeff Passan have all reported that the Yankees have shown no real interest in Arenado.

So where does that leave the Yankees?

With Bregman signing a three-year, $120 deal with the Yankees’ American League East rival late Wednesday night, the market for third baseman should open up.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly been willing to listen to offers on third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Due $15 million this year and a free agent after the season, Suarez would be a defensive upgrade over DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera. He has also has consistently delivered offensively. He slugged at least 20 home runs over the last four seasons.

Suarez makes a lot of sense for the Yankees, who could ship some young pitching to the Diamondbacks, who could easily plug in young infielder Blaze Alexander at third base.
