The Baltimore Ravens are navigating uncharted territory this season, as kicker Justin Tucker, known for his unparalleled accuracy, finds himself facing unexpected challenges. Tucker, a future Hall of Famer, has been a linchpin for the Ravens for over 13 years.
But in just 11 games this season, Tucker has missed six field goals—a figure that matches the second-highest of his career—and an extra point. What’s striking is that every miss has been wide left.
Tucker’s recent struggles were on full display during the Ravens’ narrow 18-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He missed critical attempts from 47 and 50 yards in the first quarter.
To illustrate the impact, had just one of those attempts sailed through, we might be talking about a very different outcome for the Ravens. Tucker, however, did find some redemption by nailing a 54-yard field goal, marking his second-longest of the season, but the day remained disappointing for the seven-time Pro Bowler.
Despite these struggles, the Ravens are standing by their star kicker. Head coach John Harbaugh, who expressed unwavering confidence in Tucker, highlighted that performance with the 54-yarder.
“The best option right now is to get Justin back on point, because he’s fully capable of doing it,” Harbaugh stated. “We certainly haven’t lost any confidence in Justin Tucker.”
Harbaugh further emphasized the importance of support, saying, “He’s definitely our best option, and he’s going to make a lot of kicks—I really believe that—going forward. But it’s up to him and the guys he works with every day to make those balls go straight.”
When asked about the possibility of bringing in competition for Tucker, Harbaugh was quick to dismiss the idea. “At this point?
No. There’s no thought to that,” he said.
Realistically, sourcing a capable kicker mid-season presents significant challenges. The Ravens appear committed to weathering this storm with Tucker, aiming for him to regain his form.
The Ravens have enjoyed the luxury of the league’s most reliable kicker for over a decade. While Tucker’s off-year is testing the team’s loyalty, it’s clear that in Baltimore, Justin Tucker remains the man for the job, at least for now. What unfolds in the offseason might garner attention, but for the moment, all eyes are on Tucker to find his stride once again.
