Since it was born in 2017 – thanks to the intuition of Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick – the Laver Cup has had a very powerful impact on the world of tennis. Although it was only an exhibition at the beginning, the presence of the Swiss legend and other champions such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – combined with a very suggestive format – have contributed to increasing the popularity of this event more and more.
ATP understood that it was worth dealing with and the Laver Cup officially entered the calendar. This event does not award ATP points, but the clashes between players are considered in the h2h balance.
In addition, the Laver Cup hosted the last match of Federer’s career at the O2 Arena in London in 2022. That edition was memorable from all points of view, because it allowed the whole world to say goodbye to one of the greatest legends of the modern era.
As if that were not enough, only the Laver Cup could allow fans to watch doubles with Federer/Nadal and Federer/Djokovic.
Many fans and insiders wondered that this event would continue to be just as successful even after the Big 3 retired. After a somewhat subdued 2023 edition, this event regained strength last year mainly thanks to the presence of Carlos Alcaraz.
The young Spanish champion was decisive for Team Europe’s victory in the 2024 edition, which was held at the Uber Arena in Berlin.
Shelton and Zverev will be in San Francisco
The 2025 edition of the Laver Cup will take place in San Francisco from September 19-21, and several leading names have already been announced.
After Carlitos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz – whose participation had been announced some time ago – today the news has arrived that Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton will also be there.
The American ace – in his third participation – expressed all his joy: “There is nothing comparable to the Laver Cup, it is really electrifying.
I’m happy to play this event for the third time and I’m looking forward to performing in front of the American fans.”
