Vladimir Guerrero Jr. imposed a deadline of Monday, February 17th in order to reach an extension with the Toronto Blue Jays as he enters the final year of his contract.
With no extension in place, Guerrero Jr. is committed to playing out the 2025 season and becoming the premier free agent of the 2025 offseason.
In the past, Guerrero Jr. was adamant that he would not sign with the New York Yankees. In November of 2023, he told Dominican radio host El Dotol Nastra “I like to play in New York, I like to kill the Yankees. I would never sign with the Yankees, not even dead.”
Now, his stance seems to have shifted. Speaking to The New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Guerrero shed some light on what he is expecting in free agency.
“If I go to free agency, every team — all 30 teams — are going to have the opportunity to sit down with (me), to talk to me.” Guerrero said. “I’m OK with everything. It’s in the past.”
This could be a major problem from the Boston Red Sox. Their current first baseman, Triston Casas, has been at the center of trade rumors all offseason; moving Casas to acquire a starting pitcher could facilitate an opening for Guerrero.
With the Yankees losing out on Juan Soto in free agency, they suddenly have the need to acquire a big free agent bat. While the Yankees did sign veteran 1B Paul Goldschmidt, that was for 2025 only which leaves the position unfilled going forward.
