The 2025 season looks exceptionally bright for the Boston Red Sox, and rest assured, for the foreseeable future. The Red Sox’s “Big Three” are primed to become the stars of tomorrow as they look to continue the winning tradition in Boston.
While the current Red Sox have multiple stars like Rafael Devers, Alex Bregman, and Jarren Duran, Boston’s up-and-coming prospects are primed to join them.
Labeled the “Big Three” Red Sox top prospects, LF Roman Anthony, 2B/OF Kristian Campbell, and SS Marcelo Mayer are the best products of the club’s top farm system, with all three of them in the top 12 of MLB’s top 100 prospects.
However, none of them have had a meteoric rise like Campbell’s. Campbell, a comp pick for Xander Bogaerts going to the San Diego Padres, was not ranked among the club’s top 25 prospects heading into 2024. However, after an insane season that saw him hit 330/.439/.558/.997 with 20 home runs and be named the Minor League Player of the Year, he quickly rose into top prospect status.
Campbell now has the opportunity to make the team’s Opening Day roster, and judging by the reactions of other Red Sox players, it looks like he has a legitimate shot.
In a piece by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Marcelo Mayer, a fellow member of the “Big Three,” commented on Campbell’s insane approach to hitting, saying it initially surprised him.
“I remember the first time I saw him hit, I was like, ‘The (expletive) is this? He’s in the cage with the weirdest swing I’ve ever seen, and he’s got his long bat, and I’m like, ‘What?’ Next thing I know, he’s hitting .380.”
Mayer wasn’t the only one. Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story also recognizes Campbell’s immense potential, especially regarding his hitting.
“He has a special talent for moving the bat. His bat speed is just violent. When you hear it, you’re like, oh, (expletive).”
It remains to be seen if Campbell makes the team right out of camp. Even if he doesn’t, it won’t be long before he breaks into the Majors and does serious damage.
