The New York Yankees have a problem on their hands with the top prospect in their system.
Jasson Domínguez has always been known for his bat and not his glove. However, his performances in the outfield are only getting worse. The Yankees may still have hope that he can turn it around, but a decision is looming on what to do with their No. 1 prospect.
Domínguez has committed two egregious errors in left field in the last five days – including one in Thursday’s contest against the Phillies.
If you think the above play is bad, his attempt to make a catch in Sunday’s game was somehow even worse.
The sun may have affected his ability to make the latter play, but players normally wave their arms when they can’t see the ball to alert their teammates. The more you watch the play, the more it truly seems like Domínguez just didn’t read the ball’s trajectory correctly.
Giancarlo Stanton doesn’t appear to be returning to the team any time soon due to personal reasons and dealing with tennis elbow in both elbows. This could allow the Yankees to slot him in as the designated hitter every night and continue to develop him in the field.
But does his bat even justify that?
Domínguez has one hit in seven at-bats so far this spring. He hit .179 in 56 at-bats last season with the Yankees. Both of them are very small sample sizes, but do the Yankees want to risk him potentially costing them regular season wins?
