The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly eyeing a quarterback in the NFL Draft 2025 in April despite cash-rich Dak Prescott returning from injury for the next season. The Cowboys, after a dismal season, finished third in the NFC East and holds the 12th spot in the draft.
The Dallas Cowboys’ backup options Cooper Rush, who had a pretty decent season compared to Prescott, and Trey Lance are impending free agency. In the latest media address, Stephen Jones admitted that the Cowboys aren’t going to pursue both players and look at the upcoming draft for their potential new backup quarterback.
Stephen Jones acknowledged uncertainty about Cooper Rush’s potential cost all while admiring his last season. He emphasized the team’s need to be financially cautious when it comes to the backup quarterback position due to other contractual commitments.
As for Lance, Jones indicated that the young quarterback is likely seeking new opportunities after spending two seasons as the team’s third-string option. With both quarterbacks expected to move on, the Cowboys are looking to the upcoming NFL Draft as a potential avenue to find a backup for Dak Prescott.

Who are the likely quarterback options for the Dallas Cowboys?
The top names including Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, and Jalen Milroe are expected to be drafted before the Dallas Cowboys’ 12th pick. Although the Cowboys have backup QB issues, they also have more pressing matters to sort with the NFL draft, especially with the departure of Ezekiel Elliott and the impending Rico Dowdle issue.
They would preferably draft Ashton Jeanty, who has been long associated with the Dallas Cowboys. The Boise State running back came close to beating Barry Sanders‘ collegiate record. If the Cowboys are planning to draft a quarterback, they will probably do in the late rounds.
Will Howard of Ohio State presents a strong case as a backup quarterback option for the Dallas Cowboys. His impressive 73% completion rate, 35 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions for the national champion Buckeyes highlight his efficiency and playmaking ability. At a bigger build than many of his counterparts, Howard is also a physical, bullish athlete, evidenced by his 26 career rushing touchdowns in college.
Howard possesses a strong arm talent despite his unrefined elongated throwing motion. The Cowboys, who once took a chance on a similarly built and skilled Dak Prescott in the later rounds of the draft, could find Howard to be an ideal developmental backup behind their franchise quarterback.
