President Donald Trump has been on an executive order signing spree in just the first month of his presidency.
His latest executive order is sure to turn heads.
Trump is set to sign an executive order making English the official language of the United States. This signing will rescind a mandate former President Bill Clinton issued in 2000 that required federal agencies and recipients of federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.
English is already the most commonly used language in the country, but there has never been an official language at the federal level.
A multitude of languages are spoken across the country, reflecting its rich immigrant heritage. The move comes as Trump has continued to move with aggression in the first five weeks of his second term to crack down on immigration.
The White House said in a summary of the order that despite Donald Trump’s signing, federal departments and agencies will still be allowed to provide documents and services in languages other than English.
“Agencies will have flexibility to decide how and when to offer services in languages other than English to best serve the American people and fulfill their agency mission,” the summary says per USA Today.
The White House further added that the order’s goal is to promote unity, streamline government operations, and encourage civic participation.

The Trump administration wants to do everything it can to speed up the president’s mass deportation pledge.
Trump said Thursday he “wouldn’t be opposed” to using private forces to help carry out his vow to remove millions of undocumented immigrants.
While taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump further added that he doesn’t think it’s necessary and that his officials are doing a “phenomenal job.”
