The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing cornerback Darius Slay after he spent five years with the team. It’s a cost-cutting move – Philly will be saving $4.3 million in cap space – and it is one that will be designated as a post-June 1 cut.

It’s all very emotional for Slay and his family right now. But in Baltimore? It should be all business.

Slay said last offseason during an appearance on the “Pulp Fiction” podcast that he nearly signed with the Ravens but was urged to stay in Philadelphia thanks to a call Eagles security chief Dom “Big Dom” DiSandro.

“Dom is the reason I came back to Philly,” Slay said. “I almost was for sure a Baltimore Raven. I really committed to the Ravens and was gonna go. Then Dom called me and said, ‘Slay, I want you here.’ And I’m like, ‘You know what, Dom? You calling me, I’m coming back.’”

It all worked out. Slay, at 35 a 6-time Pro Bowler, helped Philly win the Super Bowl.

During his five seasons with the Eagles, Slay served as a cornerstone of the defense, recording nine interceptions, 56 pass breakups, and three fumble recoveries across 74 games. His veteran presence was crucial for Philadelphia’s secondary. … and he obviously could do the same for his next employer as well.

Once this all shakes out? He very well may re-up again with the Eagles. He has also spoken openly about finding his way back to Detroit, where he once played for the Lions.

It seems pretty clear he wants to play one more year. And he has every reason to want to do that with a contender, a team that gives him one more crack at another Super Bowl ring.

The Eagles can obviously do that. So can the Lions.

And if “Big Dom” doesn’t block the doorway again? So could the Ravens.
